This piece is amazing. I love this blue that you use in a lot of your work. Your creativity and thought behind each piece you create amazes me. The clock hands bone structure is well done and very convincing. Great work.

And this just to show that it's really "quick and easy"... Only the bottom an middle layers are necessary for a black and white picture, I'm using the top layer to keep the black black still if a colour overlay is used to achieve this typical greeny-blueish look of x-ray pictures...

Well... I've finally realized what didn't work for me is the x-ray rendering... And since there doesn't seem to be much litterature about it - I don't know/understand why it seems to be a secret ? ;-)) - Anyway, I thought I'd have a look and try to find a "quick and easy" way to give a "decent" x-ray rendering to virtually anything... And the real decision, if there's any to make, would be to either go for colour or black and white... In that case "decent" means "that I find satisfying about the overall appearance of it" so here's what it's like...

Hi Jim,
I was looking at your picture yesterday, and I thought it was beautiful. But I was in a big hurry (my son and I were going to an exhibit of Parmigianino's works at the National Gallery - that also was beautiful). Anyway, I still think it is beautiful. I think I have a real fondness for "shiny" things, and this picture has a lot of shine. The colour, also, blue with a slight touch of green, is so good to look at. I like the cloud at the top right, to break up the symetry. I'm thinking, what if you could find people with six fingers.
I had a friend way back in college, Peter, in the Art Department, who always, and I mean always, did things with a lot of meaning. Everything he did was based on an idea, a concept, something in which he was interested and to which he wanted to give shape: in a picture, sculpture, whatever. I've always been an "art flutterhead", I usually have no idea why I'm doing something or another, and my pictures, drawings, whatever, have no concious message.
Your approach to photography reminds me so much of Peter's approach. To me it's very, very intriguing, all the ideas behind the photos; but for the most part what's important to me is how the picture looks. And I like the look of this one, it's peaceful, and beautiful.

I admire this image, and all of your work very much Jim. It is the polar opposite of what I do (simple;straight, with no room for interpretation...dumb stuff.) I have no idea how you do this, and would rather not know as it will remove the magic. I cannot comment intelligently on any of your work so I don't. I could say, cool, or WOW!! or , well you know... You have a wonderful way of making the world appear as you would like it to be, need it to be, or hate it to be. But it is the world according to Jim. And I like viewing these images very much. So I don't comment very often on them because I am inarticulate. But you should know that they are always appreciated and anticipated.

Just wonderful Jim. I agree with Stefan about the 3-dness of the hands but otherwise it's superb! And I bear no resemblance to Stephen King! Jill by the way has shaved her head and was ordered by the court to attend anger management counseling. She is thinking of joining a cult!

Hmmm... 6th version... I suppose you could go for another 6 hundreds considering the difficulties inherent to the amount luminous essence you've decided to put into that one... X-rays, water reflections and so on !!! This is probably what kinda bugs me a bit after reading the description as I don't really "see" all the effects you wanted to achieve and also I think you could work more on the "blending" to have them all "talking" to each other... Aaaargh, so demanding.... But, I'm only saying this because I'm trying to visualize a picture that would be more or less like I would do it as if done following your description, which would obviously result in a very different style from the style you've opted for so far until now so, it doesn't matter much as long as you're satisfied with it and since, could it be the only thing thatI could take for granted, the idea is here ! Enough for today... I'm so tired now... But I bet that's what happens when you combine age and high-end effects ?! ;-))

You might want to consider using Illustrator to generate ripples and such, it is a bit time conusuming and I lack the patience, but it would the best way I can think of to solve the problem...it will give you photographic quality and just the right effect.

It is an unusual "bone" structure in your hands, but that is what artistic licence is all about, isn't it. I think it might have been better to not mirror the hands, or at least not everything about them (texture etc). I am trying to think what would improve the x-ray look, and I think maybe a feeling of 3D by having thicker density towards the center might help. The ripples on the water looks like it is a blend of several images. The only way to do it right might be to throw two stones at the same time :-)
That said, I love the idea and your execution! There are so many things in this image I just marvel at, especially the seamless blend of so many elements.

Thoughtful suggestions are ALWAYS appreciated. It was excellent suggestions that helped get "Hands" this far along.
The lesson learned, or relearned, from this project is that while Photoshop is amazingly facile at compositing images, the task become infinitely more complex when the parameters call for unique transformations (i.e. creating an x-ray effect) or integrating objects in ways that demand interactions that are more exacting than blurs and shadows. The semi-transparent, volumetric and reflective surface properties of water, in particular, can be a mind-boogling Photoshop challenge.

Thanks for the tip on Julien's "elements" series. There is, in fact, a unifying theme of sorts that links this image with the last dozen or so that I've posted. Granted, it's a pretty broad theme, but they are all related in one way or another to the idea of the passage of time.

I hope someday to be on the level where I feel comfortable giving you sugestions ... I will uncomfortably ask what about numbers? I love the concept and compostion .... you are great with that . I always injoy your insight on life . After raeding your discription on how you got this image to finialy work ... I feel maybe I am not to insane after all . The things will will go through to get an image perfect .... although I suspect if you are anything like me it is never perfect . Great work ... do use all a favor start teaching PS classes so we can become followers :)

Thanks for taking the time to explain some of the technique- the idea of taking a planned photo to get a filter like effect makes so much sense, but sometimes in the throws of digital manipulations we forget about the option.
My only critical comments are that I think the smoke effect in the background distracts from the impact of the hands- maybe something more subtle with less shape to it? And I agree with Raymund's comment that the concentric ripples look flatter than those in the foreground.

What a great job you got here Jim, Very clean, sharp and detailed. Excellent composition. Though the ripple looks like flat, I think thats one of my honest suggestion, You need to make it more look like a 3D and lets the hands look like it came out from the water. Anyways still a great Job, Excellent PS Skills

Hey Guys:
Once I had the idea for this image, I thought the rest would be easy. I?d just buy some old clock hands on E-bay, photograph them along with my own hands and merge everything against a background scene. Piece of cake.
Not!
It seems old clock hands don?t show up on E-bay every day, or even every week. I lost the first two auctions and, finally, paid dearly for the collection pictured here.
The Photoshop work was equally problematic. This is the sixth version. It took three attempts to integrate the clock and the human hands in a way that suggests an x-ray of the bone structure -- and not just clock hands balanced on the back of my hand.
It took three more tries to convincingly create the illusion that the ?hands of time? were rising from the water.
For version six, I decided the best solution would be concentric ripples propagating from the wrists. Well, it may be possible to do this in PS with the Ripple or Wave filter, but I couldn?t get it right. So the final touch was to go down to Long Island Sound with some rocks and create real ripples -- a technique that worked for ?Shutter Bird.? It worked here too.
