The head is a light grey, a spot on the head is water. They used to be classified as "arctic loons" but have since been re-named. They breed across northern Canada and Alaska, and spend the winters along the Pacific Coast (hence the name).

These are not too common are they?I like how the chick is gazing up adoringly (if you can give human emotion to an animal)at the mom. Is the white on her head the plumage or a lighting effect?great shot.
