About I've wanted to do something like this ever since I saw a portfolio by Arthur Tress, in the early 70's. His portfolio was a portrayal of Childhood dreams and nightmares. In Tress's image there is a young boy with root/branches for hands. The boy appears half buried in sand, with his arms on the ground. I went with water, so I wouldn't have to dig a hole :) Maybe later :)
The lighting effect is for a little added claustrophobia. Kept dark intentionally. Grain added, sepia toned.
Any comments welcome.

Hi Roger,
Thanks for the visit to my "Darkside" portfolio.
It's always nice when people go back deep in our portfolios to see what else we have been up to. :)

Hi Fadel,
I thought you might like this one.
I'm doing a few landscapes lately, but this is the kind of stuff I have the most fun with. I have a few more ideas that I'd like to try that have a similar theme to this one. I'll get around to it soon.

Hey Andre! This is very strong and done with great imagination and taste. The idea/concept might have been triggered by an inspiration as you said but it does have your fingerprints all over it. Very well done indeed! :)

Thanks for the comment Luis.

I have no problem with you not being able to make up your mind.
I think one of the reasons why so many photographers take images of strange things is because we are attracted to them somehow. So, I'm glad you feel that way. I had fun making this one too.

Strangely beautiful or terribly scary. I honestly don't know. Great image and of that I'm sure.

Hi Kes,
:) :)
A friend of ours had to walk on the other side of the street if there were Sparrows or Pigeons on the same side he was walking on. He developed that Phobia after seeing Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" when he was a kid. That's a true story. He is still petrified of any bird to this day.

Quite the contrary, I would say, Andre! It must be very strong!

Hi Andre,

Oh, yes, if it were the one and only, then it probably would have came off a little scary.

But I'm still not scared...just so you know...no sleep for days now... but I'm NOT SCARED AT ALL, ANDRE!

:)

Hi Nick,
I guess if an image can "activate a brain", it can't be all bad :)

And you gave me the key for understanding my own interpratation so far, Andre! That "little guessing" does a big big work!

I guess that I see something that I can't really understand, and so I automatically develop sympathy for the creature of "sad wings of destiny" - but oh! Perhaps the creature doesn't need any sympathy but it is rather happy the way it is? A very interesting thing... pity in the name of my own narrow views that such images may widden up a bit? Which brings into mind also the many too many "used to's", the many too many "normal sights" of my own picture of the world.

After all, the most unusual thing might turn also normal if seen a couple of times. And thus my question now can only be: What is more unnormal? A creature like this or my own inability to "classify" it?

Your images activated my brain! Thank you very much for that, Andre!

Thanks Jon,
On occasion, I have combined an old film image with digital images and some manipulation. There are a few like that in my "Darker Side" portfolio. But in this case, it is all digital. The "branch" arms/hands are real and were obviously pulled up into the coat sleeves for the image. The Loon head is obviously a Photoshop layer :) Not real...honest :)
I had a feeling that some people would find it creepy and some would find it a bit silly.

Creepy. I like Nick's comment about the appearance of a shot of something strange, hastily photographed. When I saw the thumbnail I thought it was one of our older pieces, and I admit to being a bit disappointed that it was digital, not film. But only a little :-] - it is a very compelling piece of work, and very evocative. Like I said: creepy.

Cheers,

Jon

Thanks Nick,
I'm glad you feel that way. About walking the thin line with a good balance. I guess another way of saying it is It might be a good thing to keep the viewer guessing a little. I think it is okay to keep the viewer a little off balance sometimes. :)

Hi Kes,
So your not spooked by my second attempt!!
Maybe you can get back to me in a few days... after you wake up in the night screaming about some creepy birdman with branches for hands chasing you :) :)

I do know what you mean though. As I said to someone else, I ran the risk of bordering on getting too silly with this one. Possibly, if this was the one and only version, the first impression could be a bit different?

I do think that you walk the thin line in a very good balance, Andre! The strangeness of your work does not resemble the many "too direct" images of ghosts and haunted things that somehow tend to preace too much. I have the impression, after a long time of looking this andnthe other one, that it is the fact that you don't preach, you don't seem to give any "higher explanations about the real nature of things" - you know what I mean ;-). I think that from all mysteries the strongest ones are those that don't even pose a question.

Best wishes,

Nick

Hi Andre,

Interesting evolution! Having already seen the first version...I find this one a bit comical...kind of like this one is Saturday Night Live doing a spoof of the first one. :)

You can't scare me, I know it's you!

Thanks Andrzej,
I thought about sticking with pure black and white with these two for exactly the reason you mention. I have only seen Tress's work in B&W. Maybe the next I will do that on the next one.
I just like this kind of sepia so much I couldn't resist.

Thanks Ian,
You were dead on right about the reason for the cropped head :) I was having a bit of trouble blending the top of the head in and decided to use some artistic freedom and crop it off instead.

Great and mad mood. Clever use of the border at the top I think (to make the shot look rushed?) also makes the bird a bit easier :)

Andre, the one is a surreal dramatization of your fantasies, an interesting and narrative expression inspired from the one of the best in this field. Good stylization through grain and dark vignetting. I would think you should stay with pure B&W as most of Arthur's works do. Cheers, NJ

Thanks Nick,
As I wrote in the about, I was playing with a kind of fantasy style copied from a photographer named Arthur Tress. This one gets a bit further removed from what he did because of the heavy photoshop work. But, I'm glad you are seeing it the way it was intended. That is sort of somewhere inbetween fantasy and horror. Of course we run a very fine line here of going right over the edge to silliness :) I realize that I'm taking a chance of being mocked for being pretentious, when doing something like this. I think as long as the first impression is a little shock or unease instead of outright laughter, well that's okay.

This is even more horryfying than the other one, Andre, but avoiding and splashing effects. It uses subtle things - not as much a shock but rather... angst. I think that the grainy look enhances that atmosphere as it makes it resemble some of those photos taken in a hurry when something unexplainable takes place. The light is again palying games with my eyes, making it impossible to say wheter it is natural or that creature is been spotted by somebody. In the latter case, by whom?

Best wishes - expecting more!

Thanks Leo,
A little heavy on the grain in this one maybe, but I kind of liked it this way.

ps don't tell anyone, but the grain hides some of the photoshop mistakes :)

I may have been a little heavy on some of the effects for some people's liking, but I'm having fun trying a few thing out.
