You are correct on the distortion. My thinking is a bit off today... Isn't it everyday... Never mind.
I always tend to use the camera at a medium focal length to minimize the distortion. Some people prefer it!
No tripod? You are getting some excellent results for shooting hand held!
My hands aren't that steady so it's easier for my to haul around a few lb tripod than to miss the shot!
Wow that tripod sounds huge. My better half would in no way allow me to buy such an expensive beast! How could you justify it?

Hi Mike.
I don’t quite understand a correlation between distortion and a pano head. Distortion will always be present in wide angle panos (it’s not a “minus”, it’s inevitable so it’s like a feature). A panoramic head can only help minimize mistakes, that’s all, but an overall picture would be the same. Not so wide angle panos can have straight lines. Autopano Pro do not have such a projection, PTGui has. When using long focal length lens we can have quite normal looking panos even with spherical projections.
As to my style of photographing – I prefer to go light and keep as low profile as possible, therefore – no tripod, no pano heads, no big lens (when I can help it – sometimes I use 70-200VR), If it’s a sunny day it’s 8 fstop and 1/500 sec. Why using a tripod?
I use tripod in forest, in twilight. In that case a simple head is OK.
Yes. Now I am looking at 303 Manfrotto 2kg monster. The price is about 500 – 600 USD so I am yet to justify such a purchase. And it’s only for several row interior panoramas.

the distortion does totally change the view of the architecture.

So I assume that the brown bit of the building is the seating...with the screen against the bottom of the back wall...it actually looks tiny, is that because of the distortion?
