It already looks much better imho. The shadows are not as dark as before,no pronounced reflections or hot spots and colors look more natural. This was only done with some paper for a small test. Keep trying different materials( neutral colored, you dont want a color cast) to put in front of your flash.Try experimenting with the manual mode of your camera and try putting your flash in manual mode as well. The reason why you used a wider aperture is because you let the build in camerametering tell you that there was underexposure.Dont look to much at the exposure parameters. Many times you can use a smaller aperture and higher shutterspeeds than the camera tells you because you are closer to the subject than normal. There's always the possebility to use more power from the flash when you use it in manual mode.

I taped some paper onto my SB-29a ringflash, and it seems to have made a big differance. The one drawback of course is I now need to use a wider aperture, which means the focus has to be even more precise and I've lost some depth of field. But the lighting looks much better. I'll attach a photo I just took; let me know what you think and if you feel the paper has made a differance.

Thanks again for your help and advice; I really appreciate it.

Hi Karel,

I'm going to try this by taping some tracing paper to my flash. It's odd in a way in that the flash already has diffusion material built in. Obviously it isn't enough. Again, I thank you for your help in this and your wonderful advice. It's frustrating when you have an otherwise great photo ruined by an overly hot flash.

Hi Pat,
I have seen your last uploaded fly, and i like the sharpness and composition very much. But the flashlight is still a bit to harsh. If you want you could try something. As you already said you use a ringflash....Cut a piece of white thin paper as big as the ringflash with a big hole in the middle so its not in front of your lens. Use some tape to attach the paper on the flash.Overexpose the flashlight by 2 stops. The photo attached is made that way. The upper half is made with a flash-diffuser: no shadows, no bright colored hairs, colors appear like normal daylight, almost no hot-spots, practically no reflections. The lower half is made without the diffuser.......and although there's no overexposure .....this photo does not look very good. Try different materials for a diffuser, and see what has a good result. You need to compensate for the lightloss( slower shutter, higher iso) but the photo will end up much better.

Thanks!
This lens is a dedicated macrolens only, you can not use it for other photography. It does not zoom or focus like another lens. By rotating it it gives a magnification from 1:1 magnification to 5:1 magnification. This simply means at 1 you can fill a photograph with objects 36 mmx24 mm and at 5 this lens can fill a photo with an object 7,2 mm x4,8 mm big. Its only possible to focus manually........if you do not have good eyesight , dont buy this lens.

Totally awesome! And what's funny is I *just* posted an image of the same type of fly (at least I think its the same species). Your photo is better, in my opinion -- I'm just beginning my macro career (I have much to learn). Very impressive work!
