Indeed I also find that kind of funny-melancholic atmosphere of some old sailors that are able to laugh on themselves for all they have faced.
Just as if they are sitting there, three old freinds, telling tales and stories about what has happened to them.

I thought about long journeys of mariners, and all the things connected to them, and so a bit of mystery - the nightmares of the sea - can make the atmosphere denser - I agree.
