About These were quite clever. I'm sure the Nazi's were very proud. These compartments (That were brick all the way up to the ceiling. After the camp was lberated some of the brick wall was taken down for a more complete view of just how horrible these were) Prisoners would be stuffed into these compartments through the little bottom door until it was standing room only. Sometimes as punishment, sometimes for fun. sometimes clothed. sometimes naked. Once the compartment was packed with maybe 20 standing bodies the door was shut. then they would have to stand there like sardines for days. Awake or trying to sleep. Some were sick and vomiting or coughing violently. Everyone was defecating and urinating on each other. Some who were very sick or weak would die but it was so tight their dead bodies would just remain upright in the crush. Eventually the guards would pull them out, alive or dead. What a kick and a laugh the Nazi guards must have gotten.

Mark, you are posting a series of very strong and heavy photos, they have a particular meaning for me because my father was imprisonned in a nazi lager, he is not Hebrew, but simply he was a officier of Italian army, he was luckier than many poor men, women and children who died here. I appreciate your work because it makes us think to all the lagers in the world and above all it does not make us forget. Sincerely, Max
