Mel!

> why are there so few people in shot?

Most of the people were behind me!
By this time, it was all coming to an end anyway and people were leaving.
Hmmm... I'll see if I can dig out some more pictures from this event... watch this space!

Yeah!

Paul, very interesting reading about the lack of access to the stones now. I'm interested to see that since Winter solstice is one of the few times its open, why are there so few people in shot?

Manu!

> Paul...you are absolutley "barking".....so
> keep it going....great portfolio.

Thanks, big man!

Though I should probably point out that I am actually quite sane. It is a bad bad bad affliction, so don't try it unless you have supervision and really know what you are doing.

Keep your pecker up!

Yeah!

Jonathan!

> how did you get so close?

I went there specially for the winter solstice gathering, which takes place inside the stone circle.

Yes, way back in an age long gone, it used to be possible to sit and climb a bit on the stones. But, yes, for many years now, the stones have been cordoned off, so tourists can only walk around, look at the cars, and visit the gift shop.

> It was actually palpable.

Yes, there is something going on there, over and beyond the drone of traffic.

Yeah!

Gayle!

> Mick and the rest of the "Stones" are not aging
> well,but glad you got a still of them..LOL..

Yes, the one at the back is actually called "Mick", and the long one at the front happens to be called "Roger Daltrey". Apparently the names have something to do with ritual sacrifice.

> Is this a pre-1971 photo? Thought i read once
> that there are barricades because of impact of
> too many visitors...

It is from 2000.
On rare special occasions, the masses are allowed in past the cordon. This was the winter solstice.

However, if you go there, certain rogue elements of society will automatically class you as a criminal.

> great shot and like the included people to show
> scale....

Yeah, people on their way to the office as the sun is coming up...

Yeah!

I like the BW treatment and your title is outrageous :-) I liked it a lot.

I was there in the early '90s and was able to walk inside and touch the stones. I have also have heard that since them the stone circle itself is closed to tourists.

This is one of the most interesting places in the world that I have ever visited. There was some kind of energy in the air. It was actually palpable. I hope to go back someday.

No, never been there, would love to go someday. So if it's so hard to get close to the stones, how did you get so close? Jonathan.

Thanks. You have been there, yes?
It is rare to find real people that close to the stones.

Yeah!

Partha!

> Great desert view

It's not a desert, it is a popular megalithic ruin situated on open downland.

(or did you mean 'deserted' and did your keyboard prevent you from typing e and d together twice in the same word?)

Yeah!
