Steve, I shot this image over four years ago, so I don't recall the specifics about aperture, etc.
The E10 has a fixed zoom lens, so obviously that was the lens used. I might have used a macro diopter, but really can't recall. It seems like I did use one, but has been too long to remember for sure.
Sorry to not be more helpful. Thanks for looking though! :)

Steve, thanks very much for your comment. I can't believe I posted such a weak image! Blame it on holiday overload. You made some helpful suggestions, specifically about ways to position the handle and about how to make the steam more visible (hot coffee, cold air). I have this image in my head and will shoot again and play with it.
I also want to do some lens experiments just to see how different lenses treat the same subject. Not sure if it will work with this small a subject, but I'll give it a try.
Thanks again for the comment. It is very helpful.

Soft picture. A different background might make this image really pop. But I actually like the idea of the background matching the clouds in my coffee...

MarySue, when I saw this shot, I wondered why you didn't focus on the rim of the cup...... but I see you already realized that this shot is too soft in the places that really matter. I think I'd like to see the handle a bit sharper as well, or turn the cup so the handle is still visible, but obviously more in the background. As to the color of the liquid, if it were simply black coffee, you wouldn't be able to see the liquid very easily. This could be espresso with crema, or hot chocolate. You might consider trying to make the liquid hot enough to be steaming (most easily done if you can put the cup in a cool or cold place with very hot liquid). It's a nice idea, one that can be repeated easily. Keep playing with it, and I think you'll come up with some fun shots!

Oh it looks terrible here...not sure what I did. The original image on my computer definitely has a shallow DOF, but the front brim of the cup is sharp, and the background is light without being blown out.
Ick.

Hi Mary Sue, Thanks so much for your comments on my Pumpkin Pose shot with my new son... life has become chaotic in a good way, and I am trying to capture as much of it on film that I can!
This shot has a lot of dynamic power to me... the colours pop, the contrasts of oranges and greens are wonderful and the lighting is perfect. Was this shot outdoors, or indoors? The foliage in the bg is great because it's not uniformly green... there are darker and lighter spots throughout which make it seem so natural.

Superb... Stunning... The colour is magnificent... Reminds me of fresh summer peaches...
The DoF, petal edges grab the eye and then draw you on into the photo...
Excellent Mary Sue... Your three awards well deserved...

I like this genre of detailed close-up of a familiar animal. As you know, these can be harder to achieve than you would think, what with all the dog-licks that happen while you're trying to concentrate. Cheers.
