Very cool -- brilliant colors and very nice detail. Nicely shot!

Hey Paul,

Actually, this isn't a tiger mosquito -- it's just a normal every-day Minnesota type one. I looked up the tiger mosquito and yeah, they are rather dangerous. They seem especially good at carrying various diseases. Still, this one was annoying enough -- she tried to bite me after I took just a few shots.

Disclaimer: No mosquitos were harmed in the taking of this photo.

If you want an expert opinion on the fuzzy things you might consider posting the image to www.bugguide.net; they have a page set up for identifying insects and other things. It's a great site with a lot of information on it.

Well, I could be wrong, but I think those four white things on him are wasp eggs. Of course, it may be a bit hard to tell from the photo. But that's what it looks like to me.

Actually, thi sone being dark is a bonus as it sort of sets the mood for our poor doomed caterpillar. He is carrying wasp eggs, that will hatch and the larvae will devour him from within. So, knowing that, the darkness of this image is totally appropriate. Poor little guy... I'm all too happy I'm not an insect. They aren't nice.

Hi -- thanks for your comment; I'm happy you like the shot. Actually, it's quite easy getting close to these flies as they really don't seem too frightened of people. All I do is aproach them slowly and try to keep my shadow from falling on them. Insects seem to run when they detect the shadow of something large looming over them. Once I see one of these flies I get down on the ground about three feet away and move closer until I can focus on them. Then I just take a bunch of photos. The flash doesn't seem to bother them either. Other insects are much harder to get close to; I have to work on my stalking techiques.

I taped some paper onto my SB-29a ringflash, and it seems to have made a big differance. The one drawback of course is I now need to use a wider aperture, which means the focus has to be even more precise and I've lost some depth of field. But the lighting looks much better. I'll attach a photo I just took; let me know what you think and if you feel the paper has made a differance.

Thanks again for your help and advice; I really appreciate it.

Hi Karel,

I'm going to try this by taping some tracing paper to my flash. It's odd in a way in that the flash already has diffusion material built in. Obviously it isn't enough. Again, I thank you for your help in this and your wonderful advice. It's frustrating when you have an otherwise great photo ruined by an overly hot flash.

Beautiful photo! You got the perfect exposure and I really like the "gesture" of the bird. The detail is amazing as well. Very nice work!

Thanks for your response! I had been thinking of trying some sort of diffusion material, but I wasn't sure what to use. I also found that if I underexpose a stop the glare isn't quite so bad (like on my fly photo it worked just fine). Of course, I'm still getting used to the ringflash as it has to be used on manual mode and I'm used to TTL flash.

Again, thanks for your advice -- I really appreciate it!

Incredible. I absolutely love portraits of these small creatures and you did a remarkable job. Did you use a flash when taking this? I recently purchased a Nikon SB-29a ringflash and I'm still trying to figure out how to make the photos look natural like your's do. I seem to get a lot of glare and hotspots from mine.

Again, amazing work.

Totally awesome! And what's funny is I *just* posted an image of the same type of fly (at least I think its the same species). Your photo is better, in my opinion -- I'm just beginning my macro career (I have much to learn). Very impressive work!

Actually, I don't think the focus is really that far off. If you had a slightly smaller aperture you probably would have nailed it. I have issues with many of my flower photos as well; the color looks really good but the depth of field could have been just a bit better. But really, overall a very nice image. The one thing I might suggest is it appears to be a bit dark; you may be able to pull some shadow detail out if you were to brighten it up just a bit.

I agree; this is an outstanding image. It has great composition and the exposure and color are absolutely perfect. It's one of those shots I'd like to try but probably wouldn't do nearly as well.

Very nice macro shot! Eye like it (sorry... bad pun)! I especially like the depth of field and the detail of the lashes. I also like the slight blue tint of the photo. Good job!

Great shot; I really like the dog in the foreground and the contrasting action behind her. It slike she just doesn't want to get involved. You captured a very interesting moment.

Very nice macro image! What type of sundew is that? Is it a Drosera binata; its a little hard to tell.

Good work!

This is a great candid portrait. I like it when a moment is captured, and I think you've done it quite well here.
