Remember that gull that was trying to crack open the crab? As I shot this, there was this gull that tried to look for more fish where this egret was. The egret had walked away and the gull was still hoping to get something to eat. Lesson - we should take more photos of gulls - they're smart.

I guess table manners don't apply here. Ok, definitely offensive. You should see my lunch shot - very clean, no blood and gore involved. And yes, great shot! So when's lunch?

You must have been up early to get this! Definitely worth it! The composition is spot on, with very good timing on the rise of the waves to add some foregound interest.

Kabayan! Excellent image! Definitely well composed, the vertical lines of the rower (and his cigarette!) and the banca are complimented by the diagonal line of the bamboo! Very good placement as well!

Hi Robbie, I shoot from a monopod. Although not as flexible/nimble as Marcus and Yamil who shoot handheld, it's ok. I use a ball head on my tripod however. A pan and tilt head will not be as quick to adjust for flight photos.
I use 3D matrix metering since it meters the whole image rather than a specific area - I only use spot metering for really difficult subjecs with a wide range of lighting. For birds, 3d matrix works.
The pros - John Shaw, Moose Peterson I think use a wimberly gimbal attached to their tripod - this offers the most flexibility. The sidekick is a smaller setup for lens such as yours. See link: http://www.tripodhead.com/products/sidekick-main.cfm http://www.johnshawphoto.com/equipment.htm
Anyway, happy shooting! Keep those osprey shots coming.

Good Capture Kes! This image evokes motion and speed. Isn't it great to have a lens you can use for landscapes and telephoto at the same time?

The processing and finish does give a nostalgic feeling - the horse within the frame gives this it's visual impact - it wasn't obvious on the thumbnail image.

Hi Craig, This is such a surreal image. The composition is spot on. The reflection on the water and the "vignetting" really draws your eye towards the sun and mt. fuji. Great job!!

Hi Ale, This is amazing, I'll call you a digital purist :-). You're producing these stunning images with film and no exposure meter. The ray of light could have been easily blow out and washout against the background - but you nailed it. I'd have to say that's the best training for photography. Since it's in the critiques corner, that shrub on the lower left corner is the only distracting object in the frame. Very minor, but caught my eye. Very well done Ale!

Awesome shot Yamil! I gave this one a try and couldn't catch him while "walking" on water. At least not as sharp as you did here.
I just noticed his "feet", they don't look like your regular duck feet....

Hi Roby, Your ability to get close to these guys is just amazing. I went back and re-read the auto-focus section on the manual of the D200, played around with it and was amazed at it's ability to grab focus quickly and acurately. It's features definitely need to be studied more. That said, one tip I is if you can shoot from a monopod, do so, it will give you the best results - given your lens doesn't have IS or VR, camera shake aside from the bird movement will work against you and produce blurry shots. But the quickness of the AF on the camera will really give you the shot you need. Make sure you have it on Continous shooting mode and AF Pattern One, center focus...

Hi,You'll have to do more careful cropping. This image has so much potential, but those leaves sticking on the right and those shrubs on the left are distracting and could've been easily cropped or cloned out.

Luis, this is such a powerful portait. The eyes tell so much about this girl. On the technical side, I like the lighting and the placement of your subject. But a very minor thing from my perspective is to add a little bit of her garment so that the portrait isn't too "tight".
