Poignant statement Jim. Sandals are required too, so I'd add this one here just for balance, as I have elsewhere on UF.

Sincere regards,

Anthony

A poignant demonstration to begin with, but your global-like distortion due to lens choice gives it an even deeper dimension. I like the addition of the photographer in the shot.

I see this rather differently to James and find I really like how it breaks the conventions, his stare back at you from the edge actually makes an invisible line to centre, the grain suits a more tense atmosphere. The arrangement and the pose work to bring out the character to which you refer.

Thank you for your comments! Exposure was definitely an issue that day, but you've described Matt to a tee: butch, grainy, and definitely out of centre

Very butch image. Rather grainy effect is disappointing. He faces out of the centre of the image - try placing your model so that he brings you gaze back into the centre.

The chaos comes across, the 16mm is great here making the flag covered coffin dominate with lines taking you into the scene. This is one of those photos which could be in a book in 2010 looking at photos of the decade.

I think the expression on the peoples face say it all. As for the picture, I would have used a higher DOF and darken the picture a little bit. The composition seem great to me. Keep up the good work.

I like the shot but the two chalk "x's" are distracting... I'm no expert but perhaps this image would work better square?

thanks for not ignoring the war... whichever side your on.

Thank you for the comments. Jesse, my friend and the photog in center frame, were shooting the RNC events together, and after trying to get shots of the display without people, we just stopped trying. At that point, he was focusing on one of the demonstrators, and I thought it looked good as well to have several vantage points subtlely (sp?) in view. He also is more of a long shooter, 80-200 on the camera most of the time, and me, I walk around with a 20 on most of the time and get right in the face of things. On another note, what got me really going about this display was a) how quiet people were, and how respectful of it, but also, b) how distraught people became when the organizers starting reading off the names of the fallen soldiers and Iraqi civilians (they read them in alpha. order by state, then read 20 or so Iraqi names, and then repeat thru 2000 or so names)

Jim, a poignant, symbolic image, the name tag really personalises the issue. Also, makes me wonder about Cpt Pierre's family, in most situations military families are very proud of their boy's sacrifice for 'country' but right now the appalling spin of patriotism, politics and fear makes such certainties less certain. Of course they will be proud of their boy but may harbour some feelings about the purpose of his death in service, or of course they may not have any such doubts. Good journalism makes the viewer think, and it's sorely needed. I wish so much you had more than a meagre 12 views for this. I suspect viewers also often confuse record with political point making.
I saw a shot on here once called 'Death to All Arabs'. It had comment after comment from people saying it was disgraceful, anti arab, demanding it be withdrawn, etc etc. In fact it was simply a photo of graffiti in Jerusalem bearing those words, with an old traditional Jewish man walking past. It was hugely powerful and I was almost alone in commenting that the image was excellent photojournalism and that people needed to look and think about it before reacting as the message was not what it seemed. Anyway, hopefully the editors might pick up on your work and get you on front page to draw folk in to this portfolio. Thanks for making me think and react, sorry for droning!

I wonder if the photog in front of you realised how much he assisted you in this and in taking his shot allowed you a better one! A very poignant display and wandering around the empty boots allows people to grasp the scale of 1000 lives in a way the bald stats on the news can not.
The onlookers are important here as they allow the mind to better visualise the 1000 people standing in those boots. Again, perfect choice of lens.

wonderful image jim.
i hadn't heard about this display before...powerful stuff.

as for the photo, great use of the fisheye, got tons of those boots in the shot, and gives the skyline an interesting contour. i only wish their weren't so many onlookers....but what can you do??

nicely done.

This is great photojournalism and deserves a wide audience, shame there are so few viewers and comments here. It will change as people see the quality and power of this stuff from a journo with a nose for controversy.

This is incredibly powerful. So much confusion, reminders of the harrowing events of 9/11 and then the heavy handed approach to free speech. There is real danger in these times of a breakdown of the very democractic ideals we so passionately believe in, and I am concerned that valid objection to Republican policies is being portrayed as unpatriotic.
This is not a political statement just an observation.
I like that the image confuses and begs questions about the clown and his motive. Great photojournalism.
