I love your focus in this shot Dirk, capturing the light on the hair and a peek at the eye.. your angle gives us a sense of his vulnerability. He is adorable.

You show a really superior sense of composition at times Dirk... I hope you cultivate that gift....Nick

You can take this into PS duplicate the layer then hit Multiply in blend mode... that can give your image some of it's "substance" back....I like it as is...

Thanks a lot for the info on the making, Dirk! Considering the light conditions you did a great job! I took a look on the other images of this series (so you *did* already shot a series, ey? ;-)) and some of them could really be cover images on their first album. I found IMG_3507 and IMG_3519 quite nice!

keep it up, and who knows? perhaps you will be their official photographer some day.

Nick, thanks for your comments, it's always nice to have detailed commentary. The shoot was one of the most challenging I've done - it was in an old abandoned burned out and gaffitied sports pavillion, the guys were running late and the available light quickly fell to pitch dark so I used a small lantern and lsd torch to set up lighting, but battled to read setting on the equipment, focus on the image and could not really see what I was shooting at. More ambient lighting next time! The full series of photos here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dirk_wyatt/sets/72157609571601 996/

Quite a good image at a very vivid, string, even "aggresive" attitude both from the "pose" as also from the PoV, Dirk! I couls imagine a bit of a stronger focus here since it looks just at the start of "softening" to me, but the perfection of exposure balance surely retained the plasticity of the faces and their expressions. There are some sudden changes from very crispy details into motion blurring here, like for example on the arm/hand of the guy with the glasses (second left). Still the overall lighting manages to put the absolute emphasis on their beings and on the band as a whole too.

Hmmm... could you imagine a photo session with those guys? I ask you because of two reasons. First reasons is that I think you would get some really great images. And second reason is that we all have to do whatever we can in order to support newcomers in music? What do they play? In some ways the guy at the left reminds me of Kirk hammet of Metallica. ;-)

Cheers!

Nick

It is a really great piece to photograph. I love the pink/blue tones in the shot. I think like Avi said, a person passing by would have added a nice touch. Alison

Yes, this certainly was a grab in passing, a record of the art rather than an interpretation. Love your stuff by the way, such strong composition, and balance of light.

Hi Dirk,
I ran through your slideshow on Flickr.
Excellent job of capturing the atmosphere! Great consistancy with the fleshtones and lighting. I understand what you mean about bouncing the flash off of all kinds of different things. The technique is working very well for you :)

Hey Andre, I never use direct flash, between each shot I'm furiously swiveling my flash head to bounce off ceiling, wall, floor, my shirt, stage prop. You get a nice even mellow light. IOS on this was 200, shutter speed round 100. Check out my other stuff if you got the time: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dirk_wyatt/collections/7215760 0048227332/
