Well, I thought so Alex... it's not often I see a really deep intense sunset like this in the middle of Auckland City, and the contrast with the somewhat dingy, rundown older buildings and the dingy ugly modern buildings versus this classic sky seemed too good to pass up.

I thought they were romantic too Kambiz, but more in a dark sense, hence the Naked City quote... the street I'm shooting on is better known for its paid-for romance, than the amateur kind...

Thanks Jim - very much luck of the draw, these things I suspect... as I said to my brother in another post, it was really thanks to the slowness of the kebab man taking my coffee order that allowed this sunset to really overblow...

Hand held. The whole night was an interesting experience for me actually, I saw what you meant about the old SMC lens after about an hour of shooting. I completely forgot about its "limitation" of not being able to zoom and really got into its huge eye. Was shooting without flash all night ( I HATE flash), and was rapt with what came out. No really great shots, but... proficient. Not the lens' fault, more the monkey behind it.
But great fun... The shoot was in St Kevin's Arcade, and I wandered out to get Ond and I coffee, so was looking along K Road away from Queen Street when I saw this. Ordered coffees first before shooting - normally a mistake, but if I'd done it the other way around, this shot wouldn't have been so good... I came out of the arcade, saw the sunset, decided to order then shoot, it was the nice-man-behind-the-counter's first night on, so he took an age to take my order, and by the time I came out, the sunset had intensified beyond belief.

mmmm nice. Hand held?
Great thing going on with the facades going two ways because of the corner there.
Oh those pastel colours on the painted buildings on the left.

Thanks Greg... the motto, I think is, you'll never regret another cup of coffee. Or something.

First shot with a new (actually, old, second hand) lens. Boy, was I happy with it.

Thanks Ann... this is a street better known for its adult entertainment than its actual beauty, so the juxtaposition was extremely compelling for me... I see the reflections you're alluding to - it looked like there were no windows at all, that one could see straight through there...

I kinda liked the way the car seemed to be providing its own little mini sunset scene on the right there...

A gorgeous sky creeping over the town Laurie. Such beautiful warm colours. Even with all the crisp and sharp details in the town and so much to see my eyes are still drawn to the sky. It's almost mesmerising. I love the reflection of the glow on the windows of the buildings. Beautiful.

Cheers - Ann

Beautiful Laurie. Great job on the renovation too, but I think you missed a spot above the lintel on the front window.

Scuttling away from the showy little red box and into the wheel house, in fact (which is also red)!

Ahh yes the punishment for gloating is an 80 knott wind and a large swell to prevent you going out on your boat. I imagine that would have taken the red right out of your little red box. (hehe)

Hi Ann,

Gloating is what I do best. Funnily enough, just two days after I took this it was blowing up to 80 knots through here, and there's not much worth gloating about there...

Nice office view. Unusual colour in the sky. What is that? Blue? I haven't seen that for ages. All it ever does is rain over here in Oregon. Been raining for months. The sky has been grey for that long too even between showers. Don't know if I'll get the ark finished before the next deluge. Anyway...not much point whining about it. Thought I'd come in here and soak up some nicer weather. I see people there is short sleeves. Does it really get that warm there to wear summer clothes? Nice leisure shot with great exposure. Thanks for the gloat.

Cheers - Ann

True... where I was thinking that the fz5 would come in handy is the shot out of the bus/car/plane window... the shake compensation is meant to be plenty good-o. But, thinking back, it would have been the zoom that would have been useful, and the lack of a decent wide angle that I would have most missed. So, A620 is probly the way to go.

Yes could make many friends travelling with stuffed into the pocket the fz5.
My thoughts are they should have wide angles for travel, not zooms.
There's a panasonic (Lx1)does 28mm width looks really exciting with 16x9 frames, and the canon s80 does 28mm, but both run on special batteries.
At 35mm I think the a 620 the widest thing on AA's I've found so far...

It's A80-ish... it's a 7MP jobby, has the swing out and rotate preview screen (what you had trouble with on the 80, if I remember rightly).. it's also got a Scene setting where you can tell the camera what the likely situation is (Children & Pets is one setting here) which presumably alters the choices it makes for shutter speed and aperture.. but if I had my time over again, I think the Panasonic DMC-FZ5 would be my choice. Not so easy to stick in your pocket without making people think you REALLY like them, but I've heard only good things about the pictures it takes...

Hmmm is this the new thing in the same line as the a80?. I'm researching travel cameras for friends. Does look like the nicest thing you can fit in your pocket.

Ha! Sorry Roger, I meant the suburb, not the bridge itself - although that would also hold true of the bridge, were it in the shot. In fact, it's about 45 degrees out of shot to the right of this picture...

Boy-oh-boy what an absolutely gorgeous day on the harbour though babe. Wish I was there with you.
