I think because there is so much background showing, it overpowers the subject. What if you tried cropping in a little tighter?

Thank you Hayden for your comment about the eyes! This is something I have struggled with and have really been focusing on (ha.. literally). Many of my previous portraits would be missing that "tac sharp" look to the eyes. Anyway, your comnment about the eyes was very timely and reassuring!
