Arend van Zon, the first tip is to try make the bug feel like it's looking at you. You do this by trying to get on the same plane as the subject. Also think about the background this really enhances the subject as well. I'm not an expert but this is what works for me. I hope this helps.

Gerhard,I love the lens and your right it's hard to focus. I've only had it for a few weeks and I'm starting to get the hang of it. I also use a 180mm Tamron for more skiddish insects.
