Hi Darlene.
Nice pose, good control on the whites, good crisp wings, so I assume that you are shooting at 1/1600 or better. DOF is great.
Lighting is a bit harsh... I'd like to see a bit more detail on the front of the bird... wishing the bird to be a bit larger in the frame so we can see that fabulous wing detail.

Cheers... Bob

Thanks Yamil. I didn't have time to shoot birds and/or other wildlife for a few months... it's great to get back out in the field. :-)

Thanks Tap.

It wasn't all that long ago that bird photography consisted mostly of static shots... things have certainly changed since we've entered the digital age.

Thank you Yamil. F/8. Shutter priority @ 1/500 (which is the maximum flash synch for the D-70). Fill flash set at -2 with a home-made flash extender.

Hi James. The background is simply an OOF grass field, shot at f/8... no extra PS work required.

Thanks Alison.

I was shooting a nesting colony for a biologist at the time. The colony was on a small island, about 20 metres from the lookout from where I was shooting. The terns aggressively defend the area.

Nice one Darlene. How many people can say that they have a head on shot of an incoming bald eagle.

Thanks very much, Jason. I see that you've been using a 20d with a 400/5.6... a fabulous combination for birds on the wing... loved your night shots.

Thanks Darlene. I got a bit too busy to shoot much in the way wildlife for the past couple of months. It's always a pleasure to see the wonderful images of what you've been shooting, down your way. :-)

Hi John, thanks very much.
Sorry about the tardy reply...
I sometimes use a 1.4x for wildlife that isn't moving, but it slows down the focus too much for birds on the wing.
This image occupied about 50% of the frame... the 300/4 really doesn't have long enough reach for most birds.
I don't shoot from a hide... (prolly would if I could find a suitable location). Many of my shots are taken where the local wildlife is somewhat tolerant of people.

Thanks Dave. Until I started shooting macro, I had never noticed them... I don't see them everywhere, but they do tend to favour asters.
