Dave,

The perspective and focus are great. I really like the background too. Tough exposure to get right with that light. Well done!

Gee, thanks Darlene, only 4 views and you already spotted this. For some reason I find the background a little busy. This afternoon I tried to selectively mask and blur the background. However with my limited photoshop skill it looked fake, so it is just as well that I left the backround alone.

Thankyou guys, especially the comment about Yamil and Marcus. Those guys are incredibly talented.

The Prairie Merlin has really long fingers, allowing it to more easily grasp and kill prey on the wing without necessarily having to take the risk of landing or killing with it's beak. They have moved into urban territories of late, easily living among humans. I like the thought of life and death struggles happening on our city streets, though song-bird lovers have different views. Bird feeders and bird baths become merlin feeders.

DUCK! Phew, that was close, well, I AM 2m tall lol. Ty for your comments. Yes, when I am creating my work, all of these thoughts come to mind, and I think they add strength to the imges, not that they need it.

Great shot Dave.

Wonderful detail, DOF and focus. The froth in the water looks great.

I am shocked such a great shot has only garnered a single comment prior to my viewing.

All the best,
Ed

Great shot Dave.

I always like a raptor shot, like Yamil and Marcus often post.

All the best,

I always wonder what they are thinking. You've captured quite a wonderful expression in his eyes. He looks so satisfied and the spread wings enhances the feeling that he really is having a good day. Andree

Thankyou, Ian. I glanced through your portfolio and left a message of reply on one of your fine pics. I don't think the extender does anything for sharpness, except to allow me to focus from a closer viewpoint.

Cheers,

Dave

Hi Dave,

I am in awe of how sharp these shots of yours are. Then I noticed you used a 12mm extender. I normally use an 18-55mm Sigma, but I never get such an effect as this. Could be so kind as to give me a few tips and to give me some details on these extenders, especially as we have the same BRILLIANT camera.

Cheers mate.

Thankyou Jinggoy. When I use a monopod I find it a little awkward, especially for high overhead angles. It's easier to carry, but I usually use a tripod for bird images. For the 500 I normally use a Wimberley sidekick on an Arca Swiss B1 ballhead fitted on a 1348 tripod. I know, the full Wimberley is better and probably a little safer but I wanted versatility from the sidekick and of course it is a lot cheaper. I often envy you guys with the slightly shorter lenses, which are easier to swing around and of course easier to find moving objects. The best setup for moving small objects would be an outstanding sensor with a 300-400 lens. You notice that most of my good images are of perched birds, in contrast with your excellent portfolio of action pics.

Cheers,

Dave

Excellent shot Dave!
Just yesterday, I told my wife that I saw Robins hunting and catching large dock spiders... She didn't believe me. Now I've got some evidence
