Hi Bren,

thanks for that. I have plenty more as I seem to shoot film like it grows on trees and is free!!

Phil, I've got two of them but I didn't want to be lugging one around the pubs of Limerick after the fireworks had ended! I suppose though I could have used it as a crutch to hold myself up with after a few beers! (terrible joke, sorry!)

Hi Phil,

To be honest I used almost two rolls to get about five decent shots!! The way I did it was to enjoy the show and I watched for the average height that the firworks went up in the first few minutes, then set my lens to focus at infinity, with a moderately slow shutter speed (1/30 to 1/60 second) and pointed the camera in the general area where the explosions were happening. I also used fairly fast film to help for the night sky!!! As for the lack of sharpness....well the shutter speeds were slow, I was working handheld and figure you're seeing camera shake there!

Hi again Sarah,

thanks for being so understanding. I am in no doubt that the building is photogenic and do think you should go back to it. I was looking again at your portfolio and was thinking "I wonder has she ever put on an exhibition?". Well, I think you should as I'm pretty sure about 12 of your photos in a small exhibtion would look great. Let me know and just so I can see more of your photos, I've thrown your portfolio into my friends list!!!

Slán anois (bye now!)

Dear Sarah,

I've been looking over your portfolio and wish you continued enjoyment and success with your photography! It's great to begin photography with a completely manual camera as I'm sure you can appreciate at this stage. I get the impression that you really enjoy the cityscape type photos (are you an architect??!) and the B&W's you have (e.g. Stair To An Abandoned Hospital) are fantastic in my opinion. I also really liked your "Chicago" and "Cherubs In The Light" photos.

And now the cruel part: Of all your photos I'm afraid this one is the least inspiring for me. Please, understand that I mean this from a personal perspective. I just think the light on the door is very harsh and that the shadows are cutting across the porch in an unedifying manner. I hope you don't mind that I've been critical of this image, it's just that having seen your portfolio I think you are capable of more from this scene.

Best regards,

Daithí O' Donoghue

Hi Ted,

you've got great vision already (ha, ha!!). Seriously, this kind of photo is very interesting. I read an article about seeing images in the bark of trees recently and this captures the essence of that article perfectly for me.

Regards,

DAithí

PS thanks for your comments on my Day of flammable welcomes photos.

Hi Jeff,

any advice is welcome, seeing as I'm a novice compared with most who use this forum. I'm actually finding the 24 mm lens odd to use so if you have advice, location on web of useful information etc. that would be really great. My e-mail is David.ODonoghue@ul.ie.

Cheers and slán anois (bye now as gaeilge!!)

Wow, that is an intensely blue sky! For me either an intense blue sky or the dark, grey and threatening clouds before a storm make the best backdrops for city/landscape images. As usual, I am impressed Jeff!

Hi Lizzy,

yeah it's called a lot of things alright! Erection at the Intersection, spire in the mire, the stiffy near the liffy, etc. etc. etc. I've got a web link (I think) in the "about" section for this photo where there are more names for it!

Anyway, to infinity and beyond!!!

Hi Ted,

I see what you're saying. I just think the colours and the clouds of the sky that day made the street and it's building look a little special. It made me think of some fishing town on the Northeast of the US actually!! But it's not, it's Limerick and this place has plenty of its own beauty too!

OK, so slán anois Ted

Hi Davide,

yeah a bit blurry, I was very new to photographing anything other than tiny drops of water on airplane wings (another story trust me!!) and was also just getting into the practice of printing my own film. I was probably out of focus slightly, but was also (until told otherwise) putting the negatives onto the enlarger the wrong way around. The result: a lot of my first efforts seem a bit blurred (some are better that way believe me!!)

Anyway, thanks again for the comment. Sure, I'm always learning from them!

Hi Ken,

thanks for the comments but sorry to burst the bubble on the meaningless sculpure...it wasn't taken in Dublin, it was taken in Limerick where I take most of my photos! As for the meaningless, I'd agree that I can't find anything in it. Dublin, isn't the only place with meaningless sculpture either. A case in point: there's a massively expensive sculpture at the gates of the university where I work and it is the absolute worst, most meaningless thing I've ever seen. Basically, it's a whole load of marble blocks stacked on atop the other to look like a three dimensional chess/draughts/checkers board!! So, yeah Dublin may be full of meaningless sculptures, the rest of Ireland is playing catch up!!!

Bye now and thanks again for the comments on all photos,

Best regards,

Daithí

Hi Marcos,

I agree with B&W but not for this shot to be honest. I've B&W'ed the photo just to see what it would look like. While I agree these photos can look great in B&W I was "thinking" in colour on the day and am not convinced this particular photo looks too good in B&W.

Thanks for the comment however,

Best regards,

Daithí

Ah Jeff, you're seriously killing me with your photos. The darn things are inspirational!! I mean, here I am in my lab doing some work on a Saturday and waiting for the experiment to come to its endpoint and looking at photos in the meantime. Really, after looking at your recent additions, I'm getting really itchy feet and want to dump the work and go take photos...especially with a wideangle (seeing as I got a 24 mm one yesterday off my dad!)

Basically: as usual a great photo that sells your little (canada??!) part of the world really well,

Regards,

Daithí
