James,
The decision to set the white balance for tungsten was a brilliant one. The color adds so much interest and depth to the shot. How did you get the point of view for this ... it looks like you are in the rafters.
On another subject, I have been away from UF for a very long time. When did you move to Thailand?
I hope all is well. I'll try to drop you an e-mail in a few days.
Best regards.
Mark

Love the pattern and how you have the one lane visually off center allowing access into the chaos and quilting of roofs.

Well, straight off I'd say go for something like F22 and 10-15 seconds. I've been experimenting with night shots with the D70 myself recently and have found these settings produce some good results. They don't totally eliminate the problem of bright spots, but various suggestions have been made to me to overcome these, including combining two shots using different settings - sounds like an extreme solution to me and I haven't tried it, but plan on giving it a go.

I use the perspective adjustment tool in Paintshop Pro 9 and find this usually does the job.

I see what you mean about the comparison with the Fuji shot - although you quote 1/1.3 there rather than 1/3, and yet get longer headlight trails. Is this right? Surely should be the other way round...

Wonderful patterns of roofs with diverse spots of additional interest: the washing, the steps, the yellow windows, the roof garden... This is a very pleasing image, with lots going on and with elements that take a little hunting.

Hi Bhabesh. Thanks for the comment. In fact, the lights on the ceiling at the new Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok are blue, so the WB setting only enhanced what was already there.

Warmest regards ~ James

An unusual POV that shows the great complex nature of the structure. Normally I like monochrome tonal quality for this kind of pictures, and don't know which one would be better, but certainly the blues are eye catching. Well seen and photographed, surely an winner.
All the best,
Regards,
Bhabesh

Wow James!....It has been a while since seeing your images. This one is very successful in my mind but obviously it was not what you intended. Just the same i like it a lot, the energy is conveyed exceptionally well.

great work. the smaller aperture really shows here, with much better clarity in the shot. exposure looks perfect.

Its something im struggling to conquer myself with digital capture.

No need for f/22 if your on digital James. The shorter the exposure the better as a rule of thumb as the heat generated by the sensor produces more noise. An exposure of maybe f/11 with twice the shutter speed might have done a bit better for you.
As i leanrned from another poster i think on here, (maybe it might have been Jaroen Wenting himself) that Ansel Adams rules dont always apply to digital.

The way you captured it makes the essence of those prayers visible. Concentration and contemplation for itself instead for some kind of universal cop above us. Since there is no visible person but only one hand that is so well focused and separated from the background, one doesn't have the feeling of some distinct human being with some special religion or belief, but rather of the very depth of concentrated thinking itself.

Best wishes,

Nick

You captured this portrait in a very distinct light but also at a very distinct moment, while he seems to visualize something from his thoughts, perhaps speaking also to himself about that.

Very nice transition from light to shadow on his face that enhances plasticity and the sense for depth. The blurry background is another big plaus as it isolates the Tibetan in his thoughts from the surroundings, giving thus more emphasis to being isolated for some seconds from all the outer world.

Great one!

Nick
