Very interesting stuff here Jim. I think I know what you mean, the hand held viewfinder that you stuck a circular slide into, yes?

Close range? I hope you're still with us... tigers getting that close is (usually) not good.

Excellent shot of this animal in action. Well done. James

Very simple yet effective portrayal of this flower. Only one flaw to point out, the bright spot to centre right. I would have cloned it out simply to make the image as close to perfect as you could. A personal choice however.

Good word. Warmest regards ~ James

Very clear and clean shot at night. No visible noise at all, and nice starburst effect on the lights. well done.

I'm thinking of buying a D200 myself. Keep up the good work.

Nice photo of a local neighbourhood. I think you can improve it by upping the contrast a little, if you have any photo editing software.

Good work nonetheless. I do miss those European towns and cities.

The symmetry here is quite good, the colours are also complimentary. Looks like you used a polarizer as well. good choice, the sky is a much deeper blue. Good work here, keep it up.

Agreed. Fortunately for us, we wont be around to see the end of it all. That's a consolation at least... will be rough days ahead for future earthlings.

Thanks Tim. Good to hear what you had to say on the matter. The report I heard did indicate that the research stations were also a source of waste. Apparently there's only one garbageman for Antarctica (an American I believe), and he indicated that he was a bit busy at times. Anyway, hopefully this is one area where we dont screw things up.

Take care.

It is indeed a very nice photo. Very hard to see what might be behind that cloud.

I just saw a news report on Antarctica and how they transport garbage out of there and back to civilization. After seeing that report, I now have second thoughts of going there in the future. I know the place is huge, but reportedly there's garbage laying around from centuries ago since nothing there ever decomposes. Something like 40,000 tourists passed through there last year, probably most of them to all the same places.

I dont mean to cause an argument here, but just curious what your thoughts are on this Tim?

Best wishes ~ James

Nicely done here. I've always wondered why it seems volcanoes have one cloud hovering around the cone. At least it seems that way whenever I see a volcano photo.

Having a laptop will make it a lot easier for you to work on your photos when you travel, I have mine with me all the time.

hi pietro. this one has good potential, perhaps you should have uploaded it into the lines project. only flaw is a little bit of overexposure, to my eye at least.

A very good photo of some "tan zi." They use these for making the chinese verion of kim chi, or for storing wine, or salt or anything else that needs storage. Not easy to find in all cities these days though. Especially where I am right now (Shenzhen).

Nicely done Craig.

This is the kind of subject I prefer to do in black and white (only my opinion of course). Attached one for you here.

Hi Jim. nice photo here, although i do hope you upload some that are showing St Basil's. red square with a wide angle lens is a wonderful opportunity for any good photographer.

will upload a photo i took of one of moscow's more interesting monuments (taken about 9-10 years ago now). Perhaps you had a chance to see this one as well. It's near the VDNKh Metro station.

Hi Ivona. Nicely timed. The symmetry between drops is quite good, looks like a dripping tap is actually good for something after all. I have one right now :-)

I do look forward to seeing more of your photographs in future.

Hi Ian. Truly a wonderful shot. Impossible to notice that rain was falling at all, it's like glass! Very well done I must say.

The Scottish Highlands do indeed look like a place I should get out to visit sometime in the future.

now I see. I'm not familiar with that technique myself. I sometimes find overexposed areas of photos hard to look at... well, when learning anything new it takes time.

as for Guangxi, never been to the rice terraces in winter time, so they will definitely look different. And I'll be there during Chinese New Year, so I'm just hoping the crowds are not as massive as they are everywhere else in China at that time. That can turn a peaceful and tranquil place into a madhouse.

With respect to the HDR photography, I've decided to continue with it, but in daylight conditions with easier subjects. that should make it somewhat easier and hopefully more productive.

I did manage some nice photos of the Bank of China building again, and discovered that they have an observation deck on the 42nd floor there. Unfortnately I discovered that after returning to Shenzhen last night.

Hi Mark. You probably noticed already but the glare off the sidewalk is a bit much. Hard to fix that type of problem but worth a try. Maybe a curves adjustment?

Mark, I just left Hong Kong. The weather was good but once on the peak (Victoria Peak) you could see the massive cloud of smog hovering over Hong Kong. The photos I took up there two nights ago are a bit disappointing but will see if I can make something out of them.

I will be off to Thailand for a week on the 29th, then when I get back, going to travel to Guangxi again, and visit the rice terraces, some old wooden villages, and some very nice covered wooden bridges. All in the same area as the rice terraces.

Take care ~ James

Hi Jim. I read more than a dozen different HDR "how to" sites before I found the one I linked to above. It was the easiest one to understand and was one of the few good ones that had a tutorial using CS2 and not Photomatrix software (although the writer of that tutorial also has a tutorial for Photomatrix).

I'll upload my first attempt at processing an HDR photo here so you can see the difference following a good tutorial makes. This photo was taken from the same place as the original upload, just a different side of the tower.

hi debra. great explanation. the colours do indeed appear strange but real... never actually seen them appear this colour when i've seen them in the past (only on tv documentaries). these icebergs are immense, and glad to be able to view them here.

lovely fall colours. alison, just my preference but i think if you turned slightly left to get rid of that empty sky near the right edge, the photo would be greatly enhanced. a blanket of colourful trees uninterrupted.... this one's still a lovely photo. there are no fall colours where i am, have to travel farther north to get there and i just havent gotten around to doing it yet.

yes, after a storm indeed. well having experienced many storms in my life, i can guess that an antarctic storm brings out some bad stuff.... and yes, people are looking at your blog tim. its quite interesting, and i'm glad to see you got your money's worth on that trip.
