If your camera can display histograms, you can reduce the exposure until the brightest parts just start clipping. Then you can use your image processing program to boost the brightness of the shadows. This way, you may suffer increased noise in the shadow areas, but that's better than losing details in the bright areas--you can never get those back. Once you have a reasonable range of contrast you can start playing with the colours. I was lucky with this shot; didn't have to do much of anything!

Wonder what is the lighting condition to get a shot like this. My shots in woods always have too much contrast to show color right.

Ummm, that's "Roger" actually. But I appreciate the comment! It was the contrasts in lighting and colours that attracted my eye and somehow the balance looked about right in the viewfinder...

Hello Roger, this image is really a simphony. Great armony of colours and shapes. Well balanced between ground and sky and the small tree is a good subject to focalize the eye. Really good Bye

Yeah, they're all over the place! Mine was at Takahatafudo, just the next stop to my home on the commuter line about 30min away from Shinjuku. Just after I wrote my note to you, I found out that it was my Opera browser that was further compressing the images. Apologies to Usefilm!

Hi Roger, I just asked my son which shrine it was that he went to. It turns out it was one in Shinjuku. I suppose expecting it to be the same one was a bit like saying that church in Rome looks just like the one we were at last year. :) Or, Hey, that Burger King looks just like the one I was at. :) I have no idea if they have changed anything with the jpeg compression. I used to have a lot of trouble with that in the past. I have been doing any of my post processing in the file size that I took the image in and then doing a re-size for web in Photo Shop 7, sizing the widest dimension to 850. That always seems to work pretty well for me. Andre

Hi, Andre. Well, there are plenty to choose from and they share a lot of similarities. [grin] I notice a strange mottling or banding in the stones of the paving and walls that isn't there on the originals uploaded to Usefilm. Do you know if they are applying extra JPEG compression?

Here is a view with a narrower field of view with the fisheye distortion fully remove. However, note that it is not free of a different kind of distortion. See how the oranges are no longer spherical in the corner, and how one woman's leg has been splayed, similarly. Personally, I prefer the wide field of view and the retention of correct shapes and relative sizes in the fisheye view...
