How did you get the clouds (jet trails?) to do that? Great shot James.

This looks like "wings in the sky"! The cloud formations really complement the line of the bridge. Very elegant! A good choice of tonality, it improves the effect of the whole shot! Visually stunning!

Beautiful shot, the way the jet streams in the sky play against the bridge is very interesting, you have a good eye.

I love the combination of the sunlit facade and the cloudy sky. It's an interesting photo that caught my eye while perusing a gallery page. The image quality of the 4x5 neg shows, even in this lo-res scan. Nice work.

I really like this shot but I do have one criticism regarding the sky.The central portion looks very heavy and seems to hang as a mass over the building. I think a little toning down would produce a much more balanced shot.

thanks for the nice comments, guys.

david - HABS/HAER has very strict guidelines for any photographic materials submitted to them, and they would probably not be too fond of the liberties i took in making this particluar print. and yes, i shoot thousands of negatives each year for them, sometimes under less-than-ideal conditions. the archival print of the salem depot view above which was submitted to HABS is not toned, nor is it as contrasty as this personal print is - i just printed one this way for fun.

On 4x5", f:22 is a nice midrange aperture, Markos, not really that extreme.

Good to see your work here James. I always enjoy your contributions over on the LF forum.

In this image you've made some aesthetic choices that I would guess go beyond the documentary guidelines of HABS--you've got good clouds, probably some filtration to bring them out, the golden-hour light, the track headed off into the distance, etc.

Just out of curiosity, how much aesthetic freedom do you have in the HABS/HAER world? Clearly you want to make the best images you can, but I'm sure you must have to turn out a lot of images to make a living at it, and the good light and the clouds aren't always going to be there. Are the editors of the archive looking at these qualities, and do you have certain kinds of shots you are required to get?
