The question is, to what extent are you willing to sacrifice texture to backlight. Here I think there's a bit too much of the fur blown out, though this might also be due to monitor differences. One is never on firm ground with monitor calibration :-)
You seem to have had enough room to work with, so why crop the paw?

Once again, try to avoid things growing out of peoples' heads in photos. I see the aperture was pretty big, this is a problem with digital cameras, they'll give you lots of DOF even when the lens is wide open. Much shallower DOF would probably have worked better here. Another point you could consider is shooting from a lower position, one that will bring the viewer to an eye-to-eye level with the child so as to see the world as the child does, rather than making it an adult's view of the child. I hope that makes sense, my sentences get somewhat incoherent when I'm sleepy, which I am at the moment :-)

You got the expression, the catchlights are there as well, making this a very lively portrait. The chief problem I see here is the background. Firstly, it's too busy - knees and stuff growing out of portraitees' heads is unlikely to work well. Secondly, the colour of the sofa and the colour of the baby's hair is almost identical, making the head kind of blend into the background (though sometimes this effect can be desirable). Also, avoid cropping off bits of models' feet.

I'm thinking these three photos could work better if presented as a vertical triptych, so that they can be viewed all at once. It might make it easier to appreciate the 'project' nature of the shots. The subtle differences (one of the pics has a background other than just the carpet, one does not have the laser dot) could provide a sufficient degree of variation (other than the position of the cat). Try playing around with different arrangements of the three shots, perhaps you'll find one that you like.

Jenny,
I like the use of motion blur in this series of images. On this particular image, it seems like it would be stronger if you cropped or cloned out the distraction in the upper left corner. On the series in general, here is what I'd like to see: I think it is best when you can see the cat's face, since the expression is part of what makes a photo interesting. Maybe shooting from a lower angle would help. Can you do that without including distracting background elements?
Personally I don't need to see the red laser dot, since I'm far more interested in the cat motion than the tools you used to make him (her?) move about.
Overall, this is quite a fun series. Hope to see more in the future.

Once I get an opportunity to return to this location (it's inside a touristy area with admission) I plan to reshoot it with my (new) Nikon D70... it handles low light far better, and allows me to properly set focus distance. I'm looking forward to it. I feel like there's potential here, it just needs better technical application.

Hi Jenny, following your question in the forum I thought I'd drop by to have alook at your portfolio. This one caught my attention as I took a comparable shot in February:
http://www.usefilm.com/image/322549.html
The focus is a bit on the background behind you, leaving your selfportrait a bit out of focus. Not an easy shot, though, and I like that you left the camera out of this shot.
Have you considered cropping off a tad off the top of thse photo? I think that would balance the composition a bit more. The interesting bits and pieces, hinting at your portrait are located in the lower section, and I don't think the top adds much more to the shot.
A creative composition.... (without patting myself on the back at the same time... )
Cheers,
Hugo

You more or less define yourself as a beginner in photography, Ms. Brown. Your photos belie this. They show maturity, daring and in a way you remind me in your Masaic self portrait I and II of Picasso. As you show yourself on your page, I think it fair that you se my face as well. It is to be found on www.drspringmann.com side by side with information abouta book I recently published, which might or might not interest you. Thank you for your interest in my "The white head dress" Unfortunately I don't understand what you mean by "moire". The photo was taken near the beach in Tel Aviv and as far as I know there is no story behind it. Regards, Dr. Rafael (Rafi) Springmann p.s. If by moire you mean the small wavelets in the shadow, they are the result of imperfect scanning.

This is a dual challenge for me - I'm trying to get spontaneous shots, while really pushing the limits of my equipment. (Both ISO and color balance are difficult on the 707.) So basically, I'm digitally push-processing the images. Here's the original, uncorrected.

Original below. I'm pushing the limits of this camera, effectively doing digital push-processing to function in low light. (Additionally, its color balance during flash sucks something awful.) So this is a bit of a dual-challenge, getting the spontaneous images I'm after while really pushing the limits of my gear.

Jenny --
This is a beautiful moment you've captured. The look on big sister's face is wonderful. This will be something for them to treasure as they grow up. Did you ever finsh the conversion to b&w? Personally, I like the color in the children but agree the background is a bit distracting. It's still a wonderful moment in their lives.
Thanks for your comments on my Tiger in a Pot, and my apologies for taking so long to reply. I do appreciate your words. Work deadlines seem to be running my time lately--I'll be happy when this project is done and I have more time to play again.
Regards, Anne
