Good question!
If I thought the way you suggest, I would end up in much better journalistic photos, right? And I think that is very very important. (seen Saad Salem's photo "two extra bare feet"?)

This teaches me photography is not only about lighting and composition... You always have to think about what you are doing. I study sociology, a part of my thesis is about the role of the researcher with respect to the people she studies with... A part of me says to myself that I have a partial and positioned view of what is going on around me and I should not deny that, on the contrary I should make it visible sometimes. So if I'm a demonstrator, my photos will be what a demonstrator sees. I'm not a traveller, I interpret things from my own viewpoint and I think it is sometimes quite good to show what you see is seen by a specific person... You can't avoid putting yourself to your photos, it is always you with your identities behind the camera, all photos are personal histories as well... When you look at the nudes photos in usefilm, for example, you can see what the photographers appreciate in bodies and attitudes, you can see his/her personal tastes... I think of michelangelo, when you look at his paintings and sculptures of adult male bodies, you can see what he desires...
(my photo is of course not comparable to those!)
So it would change a lot if I looked around like a traveller. And because the people who look at these photos havent been there in my position, they also look at it somehow as travellers, no? Then, if I try passing to a travellers position, I might be better able to speak in a common language with the viewers... That would be a stronger speech, a deeper dialogue. And that makes a different story. This is definitely worth trying. I learn that my attitudes in taking photos cannot and should not be fixed, I should be far more flexble, I should be able to shift between different identities and viewpoints...
Do I get right what you say, dear Arup?

Bhalo theko :)

Just think you are not a demonstrator.. think you are a traveler.. and suddenly happen to be there on the spot .. you see what you show here in the photograph .. the men in uniform looking at you .. the man on the extreme right .. even smiling .. can you feel the tension of the place .. the drama ??

What's your view ??

Teşekkür ederim Umut. Haklısın aslında. Ama çerçevelere biraz gıcığım ben... zaten fotoğrafı çekerken çerçevelemiş oluyoruz, çizgilerin etrafına yeni çizgiler koyunca sınır üstüne sınır koymuş gibi geliyor, biraz kıstırılmış hissettiriyor bana çerçeveler.
microsoft office picture manager'ı kullanıyorum. Belki elimdeki birkaç önemli işi bitirdikten sonra şu bilgisayarı formatlayıp photoshop yüklerim.
selamlar,
zeynep

Shukran, Saad,
yes, in some aspects we have relatively more freedom. What you tell about is horrible... Knowing that many people here could do the same, or would appreciate what is done in Baghdad...
I think we should always demand more, demand the better, even in the worst conditions. But it is probably easier to say this than doing it, or living in it...
Take care, stay well,
zeynep

Hello Dear Arup,

thanks a lot. It's a coincidence that I have this 55mm lens, but it has become one of my few conscious choices in photography. I agree that a shot like this would look much more interesting, with a lot more information with a 28mm lens. But I still want to conservatively stick on the 55mm, as I think it makes photos more loyal to what I see with my eyes. As you said before, it is impossible to capture the moment exactly as it is, with everything in the surrounding, and all the smells and heat and movement; knowing that, I still obsessively want to stick to it, and I feel very wide or very narrow angle lenses don't show what I see, I even feel deceived by them sometimes.

But I also find these lenses and photos taken with them very exciting. Fisheye lenses seem wonderful to me. But I don't have such equipments! Maybe that's another reason I'm happy with the 55mm :)

about the police, with this shot it wouldn't be possible to include them, even with a fish eye. So this question again shows that you are right that the photo lacks the feeling of surroundings! On that day there were a few thousand people in the demonstration, and the LGBTT group with the rainbow flag was hardly 100. So, if you could see the surroundings of this photo, you would see lots of people from other groups with their different kinds of flags, which indeed could be interesting. but we were not surrounded by the police like that. the armed police with the uniforms surround the whole group of demonstrators like an outer shell, some others watch from high buildings around to shoot at you "if necessary" (!). but the ones who film us are the ones we call "the civils", you know they're police but they aren't uniformed. (I'll try putting photos of the police as well) They move around you or film you as the groups enter into the field one by one. As another consequence, sometimes when I take photos at demonstrations, if the demonstrators don't already know me, I feel their suspicious looks over me, "are there women civils as well??" :)

All the best, dear friend.

thank you so much Zeynep,
in fact you have a lot of freedom in your country,
just telling you one thing that I have read in local journal hanged in a stand about ten days ago,(I do not read any journal)
at Baghdad the citizens of a big living quarter brought nine gay peoples and slain them publicly in front of all pedestrians,
you have the right to blur the shot ,
thank you for the first replay,
Saad.

Thank you so much Manolis.
In fact the situation in Turkey is no better than what you say for Greece.. This photo is not a representative one, yes some people are still trying, like they do everywhere, but there is no real mobilization. I'm surprized at what you say about Greece, because the movements there have been a hope for many people here. There are still lots of stickers in the walls in my university, saying "Alexis you're my friend", and writings in the streets like "rising all around, atina all around"...
regards with lots of hope :)

Excellent dear Zeynep.
Let me tell you my personal choice here.. You took the shot with a 55 mm lens I believe. These shots look much interesting if taken with a wide angle view say at least 28 mm. In this way, more activity could be shown on both the horizontal sides, which could allow the viewer to get the feel of the place you took your shot.

Though this is an excellent photo journalistic shot.. it somehow lacks the feel of the surrounding.

I read your answer/comment to Saad Salem, and you mentioned the police were there too, filming your activity. Just imagine.. inclusion of the group of police taking snaps of your group could add more drama to this image..

What's your view??

Stay well, My best wishes always.
