I know I am very happy with my D70. Good price, easy to handle, and the best "kit" lens I have ever encountered.

Thanks Richard. I don't think that I will be going for the "big bucks either", but I will definitely look into the others that you mentioned. I've heard a lot of good things about Nikon. Thanks again!

There are several great digitals on the market, and price will probably be one of the deciding factors in your choice. If you have any of the "L" series Canon lenses you will probably want to stay with Canon. The 20D is a very good camera for the price (I think about $1500 US for the body), good build, lots of features. If you do not have any of the pro Canon lenses then there are others you might consider. I am VERY happy with my Nikon D70, and I have a couple of friends who rave about the Konica-Minolta 7D. You might even want to wait until the spring when the Nikon D200 is released. If you have a huge budget then there is the Nikon D2X, and several Canons in the mega-buck class. Not for me though!!!!!

I'm glad to hear that about the black and white photos. That has been one of my concerns about diving into digital. I just love the grainy look of black and white film and I wasn't sure if you could really capture that with digital.

I'm using a Canon Rebel right now and was thinking about going digital with a Canon SLR so that I could share lenses. Do you think Canon has any GREAT digital SLR cameras or do you suggest going with something else?

Honestly Sheila, I am a convert. I bought a D70 for some commercial photography I was doing, and now I use it ALL the time. Previously my worry was if I would be able to get the right "look" for my B+W's. Since I am primarily a B+W landscape photographer, this was VERY important. It took some experimentation in Photoshop, but now I am pleased, and more important so are my customers. My next show will probably be all digital! The biggest advantage for me is having total control of my work from start to finish. Other advantages are the obvious ones, instant confirmation of the shot, being able to shoot as many images as you want etc. I'm sure you have heard it all before. If you are thinking about it, I would wait until you can afford a DSLR though. My D70 works basically the same as an F80, no shutter lag, instant start-up etc. The initial cost is greater (a D70 with the 18-70DX lens is about $1500 in Canada), but I have no regrets about making the switch.

Thanks again Richard. How do you like shooting "on the dark side?" It gets more and more tempting every day.

Some very interesting portraits in your portfolio, and this is my fav. Excellent exposure, and putting the figure on the right side of the image creates dramatic tension appropriate for the subject. Not sure of the photographic terms to explain that, so I hope you get the meaning. When I shot film (I'm only a recent convert to the "Dark Side"), Plus X was exceeded only by Tri-X as my fav. I found it more forgiving, and I still have a few rolls in the fridge for my F80 and a special occasion. Congrats.

I'm hoping that he will let me do it again with color film. :)

That's a great shot Sheila!
How fun that he won't mind posing for you.

Hi Susie-

I shot this on Illford black and white film for my dark room class, so unfortunately there isn't a color version to post. I wonder if he will indulge me once more to get it in color...

Nice Sheila! I've got 183. Most probably won't get this! :)
I like the b/w. I'd like to see it in color too. I bet both are nice.
