About That's the name of this little street! 'The Shambles'. Here's a bit of history for those who like that sort of thing?

The Shambles is often called Europe's best preserved medieval street, although the name is also used to collectively refer to the surrounding maze of narrow, twisting lanes and alleys as well. The street itself is mentioned in the Domesday Book, so we know that it has been in continuous existence for over 900 years.

The Shambles has the effect of a time machine, transporting you back to the Elizabethan period. The houses that jostle for space along The Shambles project out over the lane in their upper stories, as if trying to meet their neighbours opposite.

Shops in The Shambles - note the window sills where meat was displayed in the medieval period.
In some places the street is so narrow that if you stand with arms outstretched you can touch the houses on both sides.

The name "Shambles" comes from the Saxon "Fleshammels", which means, "the street of the butchers", for it was here that the city's butcher's market was located.

The butcher's shops have now been replaced with shops catering to visitors, including jewelry and antiques; indeed, the Shambles is now one of the premier shopping areas in the city of York.

Have a great weekend one and all!!

Best regards, Chris

P.S. I'll try and post the original, out-of-the-camera shot so that you can see what a difference a bit of jiggery-pokery can make!

Chris, Excellent perspective on how narrow the streets really are. Only had 4 quick hrs. in York on a school trip but will never forget it. Thanks for the memories. Marilyn

It's amazing how you turned the original into this great shot. Wonderful work, Chris. Those buildings on the left look like they could tumble over.

An excellent image with very interesting info Chris. The blue sky doesnt bother me - perhaps because in South Africa the sky is evn brighter and often more intense, especially if one uses a polariser. The detail on the buildings is great. Great work.

As Stephen says Chris, I'm amazed the street is clear. It's always been heaving when I've visited York. Now, as to the sky. People's comments about its vivacity has missed the key point - it's York - the sky's never blue in York, it rains 24 hours a day and floods every other week. You need a good broody black sky I reckon.

Chris tell us when you'll held your next course in PS...

It's an incredible work giving the "Shamble" a real ancient look. 6 o clock AM? I remember it was full of crowd when I watched at it my first (and only) time :-)

I bet this was another of your silly o'clock in the morning jaunts Chris! Can't believe there were no people about!!! this place is alway packed when i go there! Good leading line with the sinous curves of the road. I like the colours too (got to disagree with Petal here!) and the way you've really caught the houses leaning into the road. Nice one Chris!

I looked at your "out-of-camera" shot Chris, and I have to say you are a master of recognizing a picture and bringing it out! Wonderful composition. I am very appreciative of your "about" as it adds so much to the already great image. A great job of showing the possibilities in PS. An outstanding job. Larry.

Excellent work with PS to rescue all that good information from the shadows. But I find the sky a bit too much of a good thing. A very strong preference for a certain sort of sky might turn into a mannerism that detracts from the impact of images because it's overdone. I don't think you're there yet, Chris, and I'm unusually sensitive to unnatural looking things as you know. But I thought I'd say it, anyway.

Yeah, you're probably right about the sky, petal, but you know me! Love my blue skies and fluffy clouds!! )) Perhaps I should have just 'washed it out' a bit for a bit more reality?
Ah well, you live and learn?
Hopefully! )
Thanks for the honest and encouraging comment! Much appreciated!
Best regards, Chris

Fabulous shot and some great jiggery-pokery or 'digital surgery' as I call it.... LOL!!! It worked wonders for the Shambles, but IMOH it's a bit overkill on the sky.... I know there's an album called 'true blue', but this is a bit 'too blue' for me.... But I still like it very much and know from experience how difficult it is to take a good shot 'in there'..... (isn't York a great place to wander round.... loved to go back, but there are only so many days in a year... ;-D). Great view, love the road going round the bend... very nice composition... well done!!!
BTW you didn't guess but your 'full marks' comment did have something in it that came close.... I uploaded an attachment that shows it from a different angle, maybe you'll get it now... game on.... LOL!!!

I like this shot immensely, Chris! You've really caught the closeness of it, while retaining all the detail in the shadows with that bit of blue sky peeking through at the top! Your about was doubly interesting, as I'm a great fan of Dickens and his descriptions of the conditions of his time.
Dave.
