Decided you should read this since i was never able to locate any such statement "actually made"by cindy that Katz thought was clever to use here...also i wanted to mention that i was surprised by your comment since you left one saying to me,"don't believe everything you read!" and yet you did exactly that by accepting what Katz misquoted!....
(Excellent | Average | Abuse) | Reply to Steve Rosenbach Steve Rosenbach (K:7,099) - Sep 20, 2005 Gayle,
I find the tenor of some of the comments on both sides uncomfortable, but by the same token, very strong photos like yours will tend to make people uncomforatable - and indeed, that is often part of the point of images like these.
When you post images like this, you are bound to be both praised and damned - it just comes with the territory. In a sense, it's sort of a measure of your photos suceeding in conveying how you see things.
In principle, I agree with Sheldon - but I don't think Mother Cindy actually said "evil Jews are running the government" - I believe the actual quote is: "...my first born was murdered. Am I angry? Yes, he was killed for lies and for a PNAC [Project for a New American Century] Neo-Con agenda to benefit Israel. My son joined the Army to protect America, not Israel." What happened is that people like David Duke jumped on the Cindy Sheehan bandwagon, and that's where the actual "evil Jews" quotes are coming from.

Karina, the following was written by now retired US Army General,Wesley K. Clark Fri. August 26,2005 He was the supreme allied commander in Europe during the war in Kosovo....
"The growing chorus of voices demanding a pullout should seriously alarm the Bush administration, because President Bush and his team are repeating the failure of Vietnam: failing to craft a realistic and effective policy and instead simply demanding that the American people show resolve. Resolve isn't enough to mend a flawed approach -- or to save the lives of our troops. If the administration won't adopt a winning strategy, then the American people will be justified in demanding that it bring our troops home."
It was reported yesterday that more than 1/2 of the American people are calling for an end to this war!.......peace,gayle (thanks for your comment)

In China, Cindy Sheehan would be in jail. In this country she is a TV star. If that's not freedom, what is?

I didn't read all the comment but from what I've seen I get the feeling that people that oppose the official point of view are walking on egg shells. Strange... in a country that shouts out loud that it will bring freedom and democracy to the world. I wonder what these words really mean in this big and powerful part of the world.

You keep proving my point over and over. I have an opinion contrary to yours so you stoop to calling me ignorant. You say I stepped over the line. What line? The one you imposed on me? Last I checked this is a free country. Cindy Sheehan's son understood this. He volunteered twice to protect our country. He felt it was his duty. He thought different than you. Did he step over the line? Was he ignorant? Would you have lost patience with him because he believed our countries leaders are doing the right thing? You surely would have. Therefore you have no right to use his death to further your opinion. If he was here today, he would think you stepped over the line!

Photojournalistic this shot conveys a strong message, i have know idea about who Cindy is (as i'm an Aussie) and politics is not something im interested in, as a father no parent wants to see their kids go off to fight, as a serving member fighting for the right to say and do as you wish has to be done. your shot hit a note and that is the point of Photojournalism keep them coming, its your right because sons years before fought for that right

Thank you,Rob for conveying your understanding about the value of photojournalism and for your respectful comment regardless of your politics...no, i don't have a different shot of same with candle focused...i purposely used selective focus to blur the FG to put the emphasis on the sign and legs...it was my intent to document the purpose of the vigil and of course the people at the event...many moons ago i did some freelance PJ for articles i used to write, but this is first time i have concentrated more on the photography ...i appreciate your feedback,Rob....peace,gayle

Gayle,
From a completely detached perspective this photo has very good composition and the candle in front makes a powerful statement. Do you have one which focuses on the candle and leaves the message in the background somewhat blurred out? This is perfect for what the category describes as the criteria to place it in there. In photojournalism people are trying to communicate a message and what is focused on says it all; what were you trying to convey with this shot...the vigil or the message of the vigil. I like the shot...I strongly disagree with the message, but I would gladly put my life on the line for people to voice their opinions...that is what makes where we live a great place...we all just have to remember it. Photojournalism is one of the most powerful mediums in the world and has changed the course of human history. Your photo certainly proves that; look at how many comments you recieved on this from around the world...something to ponder. :)

Mark Beltran,(i know several Marks, thus your whole name ;>)Excuse me? if you choose to believe Sheldon Katz,go ahead,Mark as it is clearly your perogative....judging from what i have read from him thus far, he wouldn't recognize photojournalism if it was on a neon sign outside his house!...i have NO knowledge of such alleged statements about Cindy, nor am i anti any religion or race...i simply was at one vigil where i was one person there to document it.
I do appreciate your honest critique about the actual photo, and i agree that after i posted it here,i,too saw similar shots on global org.sites...but that just tells me i at least was in the "ball park" with my attempts!...

Sheldon mentioned: "Cindy's other quotes, like "evil Jews are running the government" or how about "this country is not worth dying for"."
Wow, did she really say that? So how come she doesn't have to be respectful and we have to?
My grandad was one of Gen. MacArthur's men, and I'm sure he thought it was worth it for me, and his daughter who happens to be my mother.
Now for the critique: This is a very standard shot. I've seen dozens of photographs of signs with the candles in front.

Gayle's photo is beautifully done. I do not like War, but I fully support our troops. Dear Gayle, Wonderful shot with a strong message. I bet this is exactly the kinda thing UF was thinking about when they included the category "Journalism" in their menu. A very valid part of the Photography family IMHO. Well done, Mark PS. BTW The country is 229 years old. It's a simple formula: 2005 - 1776 = 229 (before July 4th it was 228 even though it was still 2005. A bit tricky). Just wanted to help someone up there that was having a bit of trouble......

C'mon Gayle.....you're KILLING me (SIDE splitting giggles)! I still haven't seen you wag that finger at any of the lefties (a term of endearment......don't wag me again!) despite all of their opinions. Bottom line....you DO allow political comments (not to be confused with comments about the image itself, or about photojournalism in general) from SOME people, but wag the finger at others.
And I know I'm a little thick...but I'm not getting the "Mutt & Jeff" thing... or for that matter, how does the "glass houses" reference fit into this whole thing, either?
I do like the rigid contrast in the shot, by the way.... even if the message makes my eyes roll till they hurt.

This is a good photo. Technically everything is close to perfect. With a solid technical background, the message comes across a lot clearer. Then it leads to the other questions. I personally find the message, the messenger and all that goes with it to be extremely repulsive. Both her son and George Bush swore an oath to protect her right to do this. And it goes on...

Roland Lacson (Donor) (K:5,134) - Aug 22, 2005 Hello Gayle, the beauty & power of the medium is to raise awareness as to what is unfolding around us as well as generating opinions to current events. both of which i left thank you replies, give you the erroneos impression that as you say:
Sheldon Katz (Donor) (K:450) - Aug 22, 2005 If someone agrees with you they are mature and intelligent. If they don't agree they are breaking the rules as you have accused me. Typical left reaction. Freedom of speech is reserved for those who agree with the left.
For the record, i am not a Democrat!
My objection to your statements are, once again, that 1. have nothing to do with my photo regarding the technicals and/or aesthetics 2. your comments don't address the value of photojournalism
I will take your comment about my image being perfect for the NY Times as a huge compliment!
Personally i don't care if you agree with me or not politically,Sheldon,as i requested that you be respectful like for instance,Quinton was who doesn't agree with the sign's message....
I was hoping that many here would recognize the value of this photojournalism image regardless of their personal beliefs ...

Gayle, you know your my "bud", but.....with all due respect, I must agree with Sheldon about the "two sets of rules". On this and all of your other "photojournalism" shots (including the one posted AFTER this one) you seem to allow opinions that agree with yours. But you chastise Sheldon for disagreeing with you. I can cound DOZENS of anti-Bush comments that have been left without being scolded. And to be very frank, Sheldons initial comment was no more disrespectful than many anti-Bush comments that have gone without a "finger wag". Am I missing something here????
I dunno, Gayle. It lools pretty fishy to me.

The truth? Cindy Sheehan says George Bush is a terroist and killed her son. It was Islamic terrorists who killed her son. The problem in this country is leftys like her and you don't want to face the truth. The terrorists are using the "useful idiots" on the left for their cause. They know what happened in Vietnam and they are hoping for the same result. The left is giving the terrorists a reason to attack our soldiers. They know that they can't beat our army so they want to challenge our will.
People like Cindy Sheehan are aiding the terrorists. Ironic that she has the nerve to call George Bush a terrorist.
