Mary, it just means reducing the range from darkest to lightest parts of the picture. This lightens up the shadow area and, if I select it, reduces the brightness of the brightest highlights. It's very like the contrast slider but works better to keep things looking natural. Film has a wider range it can capture than a screen can show, so I often use this function.

This makes it as a travel photo or a landscape, in my opinion. The delicacy or the foliage seems very "Japanese art" to me. The inclusion of human figures completes the image.
