About Anyone know what this is? It's living by my pool and is 2+ inches in diameter.

Added 14AUG05 : Just found out what it is. It's an Argiope aurantia
(black-and-yellow argiope). They're apparently harmless to humans. This one is almost definitely a female.

Eric,

I had never seen them till just two days ago. It was very disturbing to be in a field surrounded by these guys. There were about a dozen of them in a 6 foot radius. My friend and I had wandered into a field (beside some corn) taking butterfly pics. We were in amongst some very large thistle bushes with purple flowers, now that you mention it.

Todd,
No cornfield. The two I've found are right around my pool, maybe 20 feet from my house. This one's in a thistle plant right next to the fence and the other is next to the side of the pump shed. Scary critters 'til I found what exactly they were.

Eric,

Great shot. Amazing clarity. We found ourselves surrounded by these guys when we wandered into a field taking Monarch Butterfly pics. Was this guy near a corn field, by chance? Thanks for commenting on my pic.

You managed to freak me out! Coming from someone who finds spiders captivating but terrifying. Excellent sharp image! I don't know what type of spider this is, but it definately looks poisonous.
