Hi Leora. Thanks for such a wonderful comment. Sometimes it is hard to grasp the programmes but once you start to see the results you will soon pick it up. In the meantime I hope you enjoy my work.

Hi Judi. In this photo you have rendered my favorite color for the sky late in the day - I just drink it in until it is gone.

I have heard your name before, as many people are grateful for your sharing your expertise on PS. I too always check curves and levels first to see if I can bring a photo more to my mind's eye.

I am not so acquainted with layers, though I am willing to learn. My husband has shown me a few things, but I am impatient. I did love one thing he showed me that is new that seems miraculous with skies - especially if they are blown out, but with any background - trees can be a pain. And it is Shadows and Highlights.

I will enjoy looking through the rest of your portfolio.

Cheers, Leora

Nice capture. I'd like to see it as it was taken without so much saturation in colour. Looks a bit too fake.

Wow. Thanks so much for your thoughtful response.
I appreciate your time. This is the kind of detail I love to study. Again, wonderful work.

Judi Liosatos Judi Liosatos   {K:34047} 10/8/2005
Chris, I would be glad to answer you and shed some light on my methods.

Before I start, you should know why I do it this way. As you know there are white pixels and black pixels and everything in between. White and black pixels have no information within them. If I expose for either the lightest or darkest areas I will lose some of the details because those pixels will fall into the white or black range. So I usually expose somewhere in between depending on the scene. I call these shots muddy shots. They look terrible but all the information is within them. As you will see in the image below.

I then take them into PS CS2 and work them. I usually adjust the Curves and Levels, BUT, only slightly...there is no need to overdo it. You have already captured what you saw...so now you go onto the next area. Now here is the important part. I DO NOT usually add anything to the image. I ONLY work with what is in the image. So by using Colour Balance Adjustment Layer I bring out the colour that is actually already within the image. By doing this I am enhancing what the image shows...but resulting in what was present at the time of the photo. I could easily go to Hue and Saturation and change the colour but I don't like doing that. My high colour series in my portfolio are purely from using the colour balance.

So for example...this image...I have kept the shutter speed down and captured the movement of the boy....but still retained the detail in the back. All that had to be done was to bring out the colour some more. If I had used a different shutter I would have had more blur on the movement. I could've gone for a wider aperture but I wanted the crispness of the range. I could've increased my ISO but it would have resulted in noise, which my camera is known for. I rarely take it off ISO 64. Even the shot 'Open Fields' that I posted a few days ago was taken at ISO 64 whilst travelling at over 100kmh.

The only other area that I usually look at is straightening...which I have to do on some of my images as they are usually taken on cliff edges and when working with children I don't usually have much time to fiddle with my leveller.

So you see...you have to see the scene in front of you and then work out what is the best way to tackle it. And the above method works well with most images....especially high colours.

I hope that helps you.

Judi,
Can I ask a question of you?
If it's not a burden for you to share them, what adjustments (if any) did you make to the original photo in order to get this result?

Your work is... unbelievable. Judging by the number of comments, you inspire many more people besides me.
gentle regards,
Christopher

You asked "What do you mean?" and I suppose you referred to my writing "I'm surprised there are only two on this page."
I meant that having seen the quality of your photos I would have expected more than two BIPs on your page. I've seen other UF friends with four BIPs on one page and the quality of their photos is, at least as far as I can tell, not better than yours.
Best regards,

Judi. Thanks for sharing your secets here! The (much used) polarizer, has created some strong tones which enhance this superb image. Only 1/60s and the only hint of blurring, is at the right hand. Is there a stabilizer in your camera?

You have some great tips for us, and it's greatly appreciated.

Judi Liosatos Judi Liosatos   {K:34047} 7/1/2005
Colin. I had taken a couple of shots of the sunset from this angle before Nikolas jumped in front with the ball. So I knew what settings would suit this image. I knew from previous times that this angle and location would silhouette well. It was just a matter of getting the framing right to be able to include the ball...and of course to press the shutter at exactly the right moment to get the ball at that spot. I used an ISO 64, Shutter 1/60 and Aperture of F8. I did have a polarizer on, but I have killed it and it now only darkens the image. Whilst that means it works well for smooth water shots and means I have to have longer shutter speeds for these type of action shots...it also works in my favour for when I am directing the camera into the sun.

I hope that helps.

Judi

Colin Cartwright   {K:15699} 7/1/2005
This is so cleverly done, Judi! I think, out of the many photos you excell in, the silhouttes are arguably the best. The underexposure works marvelously. Did you use stop down metering? The depth of field shows such sharp outlines of the figure as well as the distant sunlit cloudscape.

The simple things are indeed the best - but so difficult to get!!

A sure 7
