I probably should put a little story behind this image. Maybe tell you why seeing this particular model of car in this state will always make me somewhat sad. When I was very young(I think 9), I was in a horrible car accident. My family hit a train while going about sixty miles per hour, my cousin was the only one in the accident who was killed. God, in his mercy, only left me with a cut on my finger. So what does that have to do with this rusted car. After the accident, my parents(who were dead broke at the time), needed to find a car. One that was safe...after a train accident, you look for a car with a large front end. With it's V-8 400+ cubic engine, the '77 Tbird was THAT car. One of my favorite albums of all time is Nebraska by Bruce Springsteen. Partly because I'm from Nebraska and partly because the songs on it are hauntingly realistic, tragic and beautiful. One of the songs on there is called Used Cars. It totally reminds me of that part of my youth. About our neighbors(friends) coming from near and far....to see our brand new used car:). We had that car for about 6 years. It was always dependable and it was sad to see it go. My wife and I bought a house in a sub-division that sit's next to an empty field. In this field, lies this car and everytime I see it, I'm reminded of that time in my youth... Sorry for the long melodrama, but I thought I'd explain why I shot this.
One of my neighbors gently mows around it every couple of weeks or so:). I won't be able to take another picture of it like it is right here. Someone put an old black Ford pickup truck right beside it. Oh well, at least the T-bird doesn't have to be lonely anymore:)
You made my Friday with this, Chris. "Fun, fun, fun 'til daddy took the T-bird away..." What strikes me in these pictures of the T-bird is how some farmer or municipal employee has lovingly mown the grass around the car, leaving a fringe of grass and weeds to grow and eventually cover it over I guess. It's part of that innate respect for the car that Americans have. I like the sad story that accompanies the pictures, too. I wish more people would take the time to think and write a little.
wow. very touching story. thanks so much for sharing it. sorry about the loss of your cousin at that time. your life was meant to be. the photo means so much more when you read the story. doesn't seem like the usfilmers who commented even read your story. you captured this cars old age perfectly.
