Thanks for the comments, particularly the cropping suggestions. Artie, you're definitely right about the flatness--it was extremely hazy that day on the lake (my other shots w/a yellow filter aren't much better in tone).

Chris very good shot. Tough one though, Gary's suggestions are good for the crop however
I don't think you can pull out of the flatness here. I think nature worked against you here. I have not seen the neg so I can only suppose you pulled all you could. THe black in the boat is as black as you can go without the rest getting muddy. So an increase in contrast isnt gonna help I dont think. Bleaching might bring up the whites a bit but I think this day was much too grey for you to shoot it.

I agree that this is a very nice photo. I agree with the prior comment (to crop the trees on the right, and some of the water in the foreground). Although I have no idea how to do it, I think the picture might be stronger if the foggy area were a tone deeper. It is a bit "flat" as is, especially against the very dark image of the boat.
