Hi Hugo, guess I missed this one earlier. I really like it - the lighting and composition are very commercial. I'm curious though, is that a shadow or a reflection below the subject?
Best wishes, Kurt

With a "normal" subject you have obtained an effective and wonderful shot! The power of this image is the incredible perspective and the perfect use of light. Not only a technically well done still life...but a moving still life!

Looks good Hugo, the perspective of the pen tip is well done. Good idea to get the pure white for the base, letting the pen material to float in open space,
Cheers, Chris

Having commented on the second of this series, which includes comment about this shot,I won't add more, other than to say this is well presented and gives life to this inanimate object.

Great and different point of view. Finally exif data attached to the description. Only who knows deeply photographics techniques show his knowledges sharing it with the others different by yourself.
In order to my shot Hugo It has executed by using a long exposure but not 5 minutes. 5 Minutes was the description about a thought of mine... to be brave and to be stop for 5 min to take this time only for yourself for your own and develop thoughts, emottions visions, dreams...into reality...you know what i means....

Emotionless, but by no means dull! I think this dramatic shot would certainly fulfill it purpose and make me as a consumer somehow feel that if i purchased it over other pens somehow my life would subtly gain a little va va voom!

Very clean product shot indeed, but I'm not really sure about the shadow, it looks artificial especially in its color. I really admire that you achieved this with the use of PS!

Hi Hugo, thanks for your comment! I know I?m late, but I went out from hospital since few days and I could not reply to you. This shot put a smile on my face, not because it?s bad or fool, but I was imaging you work hard with lenses and lights :) I must say the result is excellent, personally I don?t like shadows in this kind of shots, but I think they are not disturbing in this one. Bye, Max

Hi Bjorn, The +2EV was basically derived from trial and error. As I replied to Antonio, I knew what the shot had to look like in my mind, and I have a softbox, which I set up with the face looking up as the surface. I swiched it on, but didn't hook it up to the camera. (backlighting from below) Then I set a spot to create the shadow (or better: to emphasise the reflection in the shiny cover of my softbox, and set up the tripod with camera. Measured the light, and checked it with the camera settings. On the camera's hot shoe, I attached a flash with a diffuser, turning it's head to bounce off a white wall. I finetuned the settings on camera by adjusting the EV, so the surface of the softbox was nicely blown out.
Cheers,
Hugo

Hi Antonio, The softbox thing is not too difficult. I knew what the shot had to look like in my mind, and I have a softbox, which I set up with the face looking up as the surface. I swiched it on, but didn't hook it up to the camera. (backlighting from below) Then I set a spot to create the shadow (or better: to emphasise the reflection in the shiny cover of my softbox, and set up the tripod with camera. Hope this helps, and thanks for the comment.

Hi James, Yeah, I noticed that too. Weird, though, as with f/22 @ 17mm I would've thought to cover such a thing as a pen... Can't quite remember where I put my focus point. It may have to do with the reflection of the backlighting in the tip, diffusing the (overexposed) light a bit. Not sure. BTW: Thanks for nitpicking! The only way to improve, as there's no such thing as a perfect shot, so we've set ourselves quite a challenge!
Cheers,
Hugo

Stunning! Nice perspective and composition. I like the shadows too. The writing tip doesn't look as sharp as the other end of the pen, so maybe a slight change of focus would have been in order. Yes, I'm just nit picking there. :)

I like the drop shadow and contrast of red on white. AN interesting looking pen. If that's a papper clip it's setting on then it must be tiny?
Good perspective as well.

Great one, the composition, the idea, the lighting (Very!). A really good picture for commercial use. I do have a question: why did you choose to overcompensate the exposure by two stops? Was it trial and error? Or well made decision?

Great change of style and subject Hugo....almost looks like an illustration. The suspended appearance and percpective all work well together.
I am looking at purchasing, over the next couple of days, a Nikon D70..I would like to hear your comments on this camera, please, as this will be my first DSLR machine and as usual there is so much to choose from. The new Canon EOS350 for example..?
Many thanks for your reply

I can't help my imagination-but the first thought that popped into my head was a dragonfly or perhaps some other flying object. I find the way you have positioned the items very appealing. Very abstract-like some kind of sculpture for an office building-the positioning of the pen in the image makes it seem very grand in size. Nice choice with pairing the white background with the red-very classic. I guess in a way its a "classic-modern" image-if there is such a thing. Anyways, a great product shot!~

Wow, or what!? no Photoshop?!.... I'm amazed that you could get such a clean shot without any PSing... It's pure and simple, and I like the positioning of the pen and clip and the resulting shadows. It shows them off as fun, matching products. Is there a complete line of red accessories to go with? That is one big clip, no? Antonia

I'm impressed that it was your photoGRAPHIC skills not your photoSHOP skills that created this unusual image. So many would automatically think in terms of creating the image, rather than "taking" it. I find this most refreshing, and much closer to the original spirit of photography.

Is not simple image, as many think, just try it and let us see the result! Clarity, light selective arrangement and presentation of high quality of knowledge and skill, the smooth shadow enhance the whole composition and gave it an extra look. It certainly a wonderful commercial presentation.I likes it. Regards. Saeed

This shot was made without fisheye lens, still it shows pretty much the caracteristics of one, or perhaps it is the widening pen directed towards the lens that is creating this effect .. nice job indeed ! The shadows underneath make the subject float into the air .. great effect .. Peter

Nice reflection of the clip and a nice shot in general. The edges of the shadows do look like they are a but shopped off.. like after using the magic-want and deleting everything not selected.. An impression strengthened by the shadow of the sharp edge between the pen and the clip and the round shadow which doesn't seem to have the right shadowy gray. but then again, you write you only cropped the image.. weird..
Nevertheless.. nice shot..
