I've seen it - but it doesn't help - which room would it be in?

Look at the very top left hand corner of the photo. This is something that might be in any home.

So, it's bigger than a potato - but smaller than the sun ?! Another clue please!

Very insightful commentary about filters and solar shots...but, I'm afraid you're nowhere close. Think smaller :).

It looks like an H-Alpha filtered Sun shot. But, if it is, the sunspots are a little darker and than I'd have seen with this filter. However, I've only seen the full sphere in H-Alpha not such a close-up. If not H-Alpha maybe a regular solar filter with a red filter added and the sunspot area darkened after for emphasis. But, then the surface detail wouldn't be captured like this. Hmmm Am I anyplace close? Mary -

Ok a hint...It has nothing to do with food of any kind and its much bigger than a potato.

You have to give a little clue! Is it something 'bready'? The patterning looks 'potato' to me - but then potatoes don't crack! Don't leave me in suspense!
