City - Harcourt/Barkers Creek State - VICTORIA Country - Australia
About
This is the remnant of an open slate quarry which was hand dug to around 30 metres by settlers of the Barkers Creek district just after the gold rush which opened up the inland Victoria back in 1850. Parts of the walls of the long open pit have since subsided and remnant vegetation has grown back, but the slate can still be seen in its natural state.
