About Lilyvale....where are you?

I visited this place two days ago. I never even knew it existed until then.

As we drove into a forgotten paddock there was a sign telling us about Lilyvale. Back in 1862 this was a town that was to become a major town of the district. Living here were people of all trades, even banks. I looked around and there was a shelter built in the last 20 years and some BBQ's and tables that had been pushed over. There were a few Aloe Vera plants, a dilapidated windmill which I showed you in the last image and this beautiful waterhole.

About 100 meters down the road were two tombstones, announcing the burial of two men aged 31 years and 67 years old. The 31 year old man was buried 38 years before Lilyvale and the 67 year old man was buried 14 years after the start of Lilyvale.

There was also this beautiful waterhole now simply called Lilyvale Waterhole. As I walked along the banks of the waterhole I felt at peace. I couldn't see any roads, now could I hear any cars, only birds and the occasional fish breaking the surface of the water. Nothing could break this silence.....until I heard an almight explosion. It was then I realised that over behind the trees in this image was one of the main underground mines.

Standing there it came to me. I was standing in the middle of the township. Where people had lives, where they raised their babies, they had gatherings and celebrated noted occasions. They got on with their lives. But even with all their hopes and aspirations....they were gone. There was nothing left to show of their existence. Where is their town, where are their dreams....where are their families?

There was nothing. Not even a remnant of any building or tools.

Not many people know of this place......but why. And why are the tombstones sitting on the side of the road with no signs to indicate their existence and no fence to protect them. So many years apart and again...nothing. And nobody knows they are there unless they drive really slow and know what they are looking for.

This is why I said that this place is sad. Do you understand now?

Your lives mean nothing....unless you leave something behind to show you were here. So live your lives to the full and let people know you exist.

Lovely picture with nice reflections and good composition in general, however what impressed me most was the "about".

Yes...sad!! Think about the people who have lived here and viewed this scene and are no longer here.

Yes, it is amazing when you think how many people lived here and looked upon this same scene as we are right now.

I really like this scene here... Very peaceful, actually. Sad? Hmmm. Perhaps.

If this was the centre of Lilyvale Judi, it is a lovely tranquil setting even if there is the occasional explosions to shatter the peace. To me it is always a calming experience to stand somewhere and ponder the history of the place. Your story is very moving especially with your shot of the gravestones. Thanks for sharing it all.

Good series dear Judi,we have so many memorials without name and their histories here near my home. Ya,I remembered our Japanese old folk song,so I translate it into English--poor English though--
If I die,who will cry for me? Cicada in the pine forest will cry. Not cicadas but my friend cry for me,don't cry my friend I worry about you.
When I die, burry me at the roadside,passers-by will give a flower to my grave, and water--from sky--.Thanks.

Beautiful poignant narrative and image Judi, and so true. We are but specks of dust on this planet that rise into the light to shine and sparkle briefly before fading away again. A place like Lily vale brings home our own insubstantial nature and reminds us of our place in life as well as our mortality. Its worth remembering places like Lilyvale for this reason alone...

Thanks Larry. I didn't just hear the explosion, I felt it, as it was right under us.

I knew that I wouldn't be able to capture this shot in one as the water was quite dark compared to the bright dramatic sky with the dark clouds. So even though I handheld the camera I took one image with the sky in focus and good colour and another one with the water in focus and good colour and then merged the two on the computer to make the image I was after in the first place.

Yes, but sometimes we become complacent and take the life we have for granted. It is images and stories like this that bring us back down to reality.

This is very beautiful my friend, I'm happy you heard, rather than felt the explosion! An area like this is very sad, and will kinder the thoughts and emotions you put into this find, and yes they were people like you and me, had a life and are now gone.
Hopefully somewhere, somehow they live on. in some form of someone's life.

Larry

The detail in your picture is so very clear, was this all camera...or some psp?

Sounds like a beautiful and peaceful place, Judi, except for the explosions! A very evocative about, I guess that's why we all attempt to leave our mark on the world.
Dave.
