It does indeed look nice.. as a matter of fact I did try that out as well...except the crop part though!!
yaa.. it was an evening shot.. moreover.. I was not carrying a flash at that moment..!

You've caught a unique expression on his face. Was this an evening shot? The light seems warm and his face is a bit reddish. I think a tighter crop will make this a more powerful image. I played with your image in PS - cropping it and converting it to B/W. Hope you like it.
