About Poor ducks, the duck pond was partially frozen! This picture was taken last week, the day after the real first snow of this winter. At the Duck Pond, VA Tech Central Campus. I have some other pictures from the Duck Pond, but in Autumn. You can see the differences! It was quite difficult to take this pic, because they were always moving, and there was not that much light!

Cool shot. Or cold shot?

Of course the ducks had to keep moving to stop their feet from freezing to the ground.

I agree with the exposure comments. That would add some features to the trees as well. And bring out the orange and yellow a bit more.

Linda foto Ana!

Pat,
Thanks for the suggestions. As I told Eric, I am still getting used to this camera (the camera I have been using for more than 2 years is a very manual Pentax P30). Hence, all comments and suggestions are welcome, so I can improve!
Cheers,
Ana

Eric,
Thanks for your help and your suggestions! I always used a manual camera (pentax P30) so I am still trying to learn how to use this Canon :)
Indeed, the camera has the setting you mentioned! As soon as we have more snow again, I'll try :)
Cheers,
Ana

Nice shot. I like the composition and the ducks contrast nicely with the snow. They are a little underexposed though. This is a case where you probably want to overrule your camera's meter and either use a slower shutter speed or open the aperture about 1/2 to 1 stop. Your meter is trying to expose everything as 18% grey and all that white snow fools the meter into underexposing. Giving an extra stop of exposure will make the snow come out white and avoid the problem of underexposing your subject. If you're unsure about it you can always bracket your exposure by taking one shot at the recommended settings and then 2 or 3 more opening up 1/3 to 1/2 stop each time. Most AF SLRs except for the most basic have a setting that will help you do this fairly easily. It's a simple technique and sometimes you'll be very surprised at what just a little change in exposure can do to make what was a good shot really stand out.

Eric

Ana, Very nice shot! It sounds backwards but in the snow you should over expose by a stop or even two. You will loose details in the snow but gain details in your subjects. You had the exposure very close I think one stop would have given you the duck's eyes and that great green head color.

Here is the version in B&W...with all the snow and a grey sky the light was not good at all!
