Testing my brand new Kenko 1.4x teleconverter with the 100-400L (plus the all important bit of sellotape, tip courtesy of Fred Miranda) at local nature reserve today. Light wasn't great, steel grey skies, exposure compensated +1. F6.3 (maximum available with the TC on), 1/800 s. ISO 800, background noise reduced with NeatImage. Looking at the EXIF this was @220mm, so the 1.4x was unnecessary...
Well it worked to say the most LOL, Actually shot within 25 yards or so were fine, It was when I used it for more reach that just about every shot was soft, which is the reason I had it, also my lens focusing slowed down considerably, I think tripod mounted shooting at static objects its fine, but pick it up and try to shoot a flying bird at 100 yards, and the apperature at 400 is 8.0 so no cloudy or overcast use... But I guess It serves a purpose, just not for what Im doing now. but stick one on a canon 500mm f/4, your shooting 1100mm with the crop, at 5.6 and autofocus with Exif data... someday! that lens is 5500.00 bucks... Take care Steve....
Hi Marcus, what sort of problems? I've had none so far. Perhaps you used the wrong tape!!?? I hear Canon tape can cause problems. I can send you some of mine if you like? Hehe!
But seriously, would like to know. Your friend, Steve.

Great shot Steve. Caught just the right composition. Colouring is fab. Like a painting on a piece of crockery. Nice one! Den
wonderful shot steve, the colors and detail are perfect, good timing on this one, let me know how the 1.4 works for you, so far looks great, I had nothing but problems with the canon and taping the pins..
