With film, extreme color play would be done using Velvia or something similar. However, with digital it's more complex. You need to have a 12-bit raw file in order to do such extreme work successfully, and not posterize or ruin it. A 8-bit jpeg just doesn't contain enough information to allow you to stretch the tone curve too far and still retain tonality. Photoshop is a great tool, but it can only take you so far, so it's much better to use it moderately and just put a slight accent, and do almost everything photographically. Best postprocessing isn't noticed as postprocessing, but as good photography. :)

A very poor use of photoshop; i powerfully dislike it. However, the choice of subject and the composition itself are pretty good. Pity you postprocessed it to death.
