I think the girl is very beautiful and just realizing how little I know about photography by reading the comments. I love comments and suggestions, some hurt, but you can learn more in defeat than in victory.

Woah...would anyone like a tissue...? personally..I think her body looks great..and her face just is what it is...shows her age ..yes..but..pretty none the less. I'm thinkin this woman has probably never been photographed this way and was really excited to see herself as a hottie...what I notice in your work Patrick is that you succeed in helping these women feel beautiful..I'm not much of a tech junkie so unless it's completely obvious.. I won't see it. When faced with a piece of art it's taken in immediatly...like..at first glance...how it makes me feel..where do my eyes want to go.... usually..because color correction is part of my job..thats what I see first...warm or cool..? then shape..all I see is shape..this IMHO..is nice and warm and has great tilt. There is nothing distracting about the light for me...no weird shadows that bug my eyes...I think she's just...not...19. No amount ,or lack of, lighting is gonna make her appear to be...19.

Wow, it's getting nastier in here than a US Presidential political campaign. Patrick, if I may be so bold, let me just make one or two tiny corrections. "Rembrandt Triangle" is a "painter's" expression since Rembrandt was a Dutch painter, not a photographer (Digital Cameras cost way too many Gilder's in the 1600's so he stuck to canvas and paint). Some people have heard of him, Some haven't. As far as my model you can ask the "Elite" modeling agency (who she was with) if her nose bothered them. They seem to have liked all 5' 10" of her and her flawless skin, high cheek bones, full lips, and long neck (but we're talking about 2 different worlds now - I'm getting off track) I do believe she made more money in an hour than the average photographer does in a week - My jaw dropped when I heard. It's a sick world out there Patty my boy, let me tell ya........ (BTW, it's "Stop acting LIKE a has-been" (not AS) OK, I will. Thanks (oh,OMT, you could have left a thousnd "thank yous" in the time it took to write your "Grand Thesis" - so you do have time to say "Gracias" after all (it's all about manners and courtesy - that's all).....

Deb, not here to criticise, but I made a comment one day about a photo that Pat had put up that I thought was demeaning and him and I visited about it and he understood where I was coming from and out of respect for me and all women he removed it. Yes, he does love women, that is why he does what he does. So the lighting isn't something you like, but that is his style and his models love it. Now dont get me wrong there is nothing wrong with making a statement either. But be acceptable to how each do their work and look at it from their perspective. Anyway, to each his own for sure, but Pat is a caring man and he shows it, you just have to be able to see it. He is also an amazing photographer and If his models did not like how they have to pose or the light or whatever I do believe they would say something. He is not a degrading man in anyway and he does not degrade his models or work. He brings out the beauty in women and they as in "we" love him for it.

I posted this reply for Deb but I wanted you to get it too.
I just want to get this crap over with. And no, a simple THANK YOU, is not necessary when it is obvious. I can't say thank you to all my positive comments, like I don't usually answer to the negative ones either, unless is to explain the purpose of it.
And by the way, Rembrand triangle or whatever. You think that you can impress amateurs with outdated techniques and rules that you read in photography books? I write my rules I don't follow them. And whoever doesn't see your Rembrandt girl's nose appears crooked because of the light, doesn't know jack, by accepting your explanation as a good one and not admitting their own ignorance.
Stop living in the past Marky... And stop acting as a Has-been.
Here is my comment to Deb.
You know what Debbie?
I don't PLAY at Art. I can't afford to play.
In the past year alone, my studio's business grew 500%. I have a list of over 300 VERY SATISFIED clients and girls have come to me from NY, Chicago, Boston and Canada for ME to photograph them.
Running my business costs me Thousands of dollars a month, not to mention the equipment's investment, so I can't afford to screw it up. What I do with MY photos and MY clients is up to ME, and so is how I light them.
In this particular case, Pam, a 35 woman, mother of a 2 year old, is extremely happy with the photo. Do u think I should call her and tell her YOU don't like her photo? Come on. Get real and ive me a break.
I learn something new every day, and I will keep learning forever to improve myself.
Your comment was an angry one, not a criticism, and that is what bothered me. Accusing me of not liking women when MY BUSINESS IS WOMEN... And my huge admiration for their beauty and respect for them made me get into this line of photography instead of doing duckies or landscapes.
The English language vocabulary is very vast. There are many ways to say the same thing. Mark's comment was very valid, and I will learn from it... I can't always have a good shot, but there are ways of saying things nicely instead of putting my work down and telling me to look at someone else's work to LEARN... But yours was just plain personal and not about photography. When YOU have years of experience as a photographer and do it for a living and not as a hobby and are capable of commenting on a professional level, I will take your words into consideration. For now, your personal criticism of me as a person, and not a photographer is irrelevant.
Cheers,
Pat

Dear Patrick, if only you'd get this worked up when I leave you a nice compliment (like on "Estrela" and "Fasssshion" but not even a thank you from "the one sided man". Cool down, this isn't about you or your whatever. It's ONLY about the way you use (or misuse) light sometimes (this would have been great lighting for Clint Eastwood 10 years ago). Check out Roger Skinner's (Gentleman that commented above) portfolio. His studio shot's - Roger understands light. Go on my old lighting teacher's website (www.bobbilane.com) Bobbi teaches at UCLA and the International Center of Photography in New York City - she's tops. You never learn EVERYTHING. I was just reading an interview with Keith Richards that he found something new in "Jumping Jack Flash" - they've played that live at every show since 1969 - he's STILL learning.(you know the Stones, B.A. goes crazy over them, always adding extra shows). Stay open and you'll continue to learn. Close off and get "full time defensive" (as is the case now) and your learning days are over. Sorry this turned into a football match (wasn't my idea). Adios, Mark PS There's more on my latest shot - people think you have a bad attitude (IMO, no need for it - we all have stronger and weaker shots). You can read their comments if you want. Take Care

Not at all out of line, ppdix. It was an honest assessment, and art is in the eye of the beholder, not the creator. If I somehow misinterpreted, you obviously didn't succeed in communicating. No, this is not a flattering portrait at all. If you're going to play at art, you're going to have to learn to be less defensive or you'll never improve.

Thanx Jason. I appreciate the comment.
Maybe 1% of the UseFilm users are professionals making a living with photography.
I take all comments in consideration but it's all about what pays my bills, and what my clients want and why they come to me instead of someone else.
So I'm gonna keep doing what i do. Good or bad.
Cheers Jason

Art is meant to be appreciated, not depreciated.
As you can see from the other comments, half of the other people, liked it. Even 2 women.
Everybody is entitled to an opinion but you can't tell me I don't like women because you find something wrong with this picture.
That is a PERSONAL comment and not about my art.
That is diminishing of my work and to me it is out of line as hell.
Cheers, Deb.

In response to your little reply that you hide on one of my obscure shots "...at least I can pull it off dude" (was your last line). Pull what off? T and A shots? Who can't - the internets full of them - millions of them (and NOBODY'S looking at the technic). Why are you so hostile to any suggestion that you just might need to improve something (in this case, you're lighting position)? It just looks like massive insecurity covered up by a silly attempt at bravado to me. What's the T-shirt say? "New Year, Same S**t " I guess nothing ever changes in the world of PP's Knowitallism. Dude, plain and simple, you need to take a studio lighting class. You are lighting some of your models too low.- look at the face on "Pink and Silver" or whatever it's called - same thing. (and the "masterpiece" comment was selfeffacing sarcasm.....don't you get it?) - God, I thought Santa was suppose to bring you a "sense of humor" What happened? (It all just zooms over your head like a 747) ...Oblivious.... PS. Next time, be man enough, to put your reply / macho retort to my comment on the same page as the comment. Why are you hiding it?

Patrick, I Know you're the master of all knowledge pertaining to the world of Photography but I find your lighting consistently too low (as in height). This is an especially noticable example. By having your light low and too far to the side you bring out every undesirable bump and line in her figure (the "highbeams" can pass) and her face (that's the LAST thing you want to do with a woman.).Have you ever heard of the "Rembrandt Triangle"? - look into it. (you almost have the shadow of her nose going into her eye). Sorry I can't ALWAYS praise your work (even though I do when I think you go above and beyond) but the lighting mistakes just jumped out at me this time. You can retort with your usual snappy machismo defensiveness or you can learn something and apply it to further shots. It's up to you hombre. (and on a minor point I agree with Joe on the oil) PS. I gave the "Brazilian Girl shot" a good rating so it all balances out......
