Hi Toni
I believe that usm with the scanner is unsharp mask, as in the Photoshop usm. If it's for a canon lens I think it means ultra sonic motar or something like that.

Thanks, Howie, that was very helpful. I just read the review. Do you know what "USM" stands for?

Hi Toni
I was using the Canon 9900F scanner which was ok but a little slow. I was thinking about buying a designated film scanner but then read the review of the Epson 4870 and Im really glad I bought it. Its fantastic value for money. Ive tried black and white negs and colour negs and so far its spot on. I dont have any slides so cant try that side yet.
If your interested here is the review.

Cost me nearly £300 but compared to a designated film scanner its really cheap. Hope this helps. Have a great Christmas :)

I have so much unused film, and some great stuff that I got at a class I took as the manufacturers gave free samples to my instructor. I have buckets of film prints from the past and will post some when my scanner gets repaired. I'd like to know more about the one you got from your perspective, because I'm in the market for a new one. Back to the film, I was running up such high developing expenses, my husband gifted me with the Casio digital and printer Xmas 2000. Now he's in big trouble, cause that was the tip of the iceberg...next came the Nikon D100, and now....Canon 20D here I come...heheheheh (that's just me dreaming). T.

Thanks as always Toni for your kind comments. Im having such a blast with film at the moment. I have 5 rolls of Ilford Delta, 5 rolls of Neopan Acros, 10 rolls of reala and turning up sometime next week 10 rolls of Velvia, Profia and Astia.
I guess because I never shot film before I took up photography, film is a real novelty to me. I've just bought an Epson 4870 which is a fantastic scanner for the money :)
My 20D is still my preferred choice but Im having a blast with film as well :)
Hugs
Howie x
