i think an early morning shot of a placid lake with some reflection on some part of it would make a nicer shot here. agree with all other posters, the dark area takes up too much space. james

I think it is both :-)
You did well to frame this scene with the tree branches, but the large dark shadows make it very 'heavy'. Maybe it would be better to zoom in a little further (see my attachment as an illustration). I choose not to include the tree in the lower part of the frame, this would have looked a little awkward because it would not have merged with the trees on the left and the right anymore.

I think the dark foreground tree on the left takes up way too much of the picture. I like the intent of the framing, but I think that cropping off a lot from the left, and some from the top and right, would result in a better frame.
