Going by the shadows it must have been early afternoon (It was taken more than a few months ago) SO the light was almost strait overhead. It would be fun to go back at sunset or rise and get some differnt lighting. Also taken with Utral color AGFA film and a polorizer to get the deep blue sky.

I think that the light isn't quite right on this, but I love how the building is out on its own and it looks so desolate. I think it works very well as a greyscale - obviously just a quick desaturate in PS but it gives you an idea...

Hi Pat, film does still give you a much greater range of exposure latitude although digital is catching up. The shutter lag is certainly one of the things you have to get used to in digital. Some camera are a lot worse than others for that, you just have to check the specs. The DSLR's are the best in that regard. As far as telephoto, the S5000 that I use has a 10x zoom that equates to 38-380 in 35mm terms, and there's a couple of cameras out there that have 12x zooms! Of course the DSLR's have any number of a range of lenses, at equally fantastic prices. Check out some of the reveiw sites, like dp review, steve's digicam, or dc resource, to name a few. Dave.

Thanks Dave. Yes the feedback loop is much shorter with Digital.
Do you think film offers any advantages over digital. Can you shoot at 1/1000th. sec for example. I have only played with an inexpensive digital and din't like it at all. when you fired the shutter there was a delay before the camera actually took the pic. the camera you use seems very reasonbly priced. I do alot at 300 and 600mm telephoto. what does this translate into in digital terms.
hope I'm not being a bother with all the questions.
Thanks
Pat

Hi Pat, I think the main advantages to digital are the immediate feedback you get from your shots, and the abilility to reshoot on the spot. You can't alway tell about sharpness etc on the camera monitor, but you can get a pretty good idea. The cost factor as well, lets you shoot many more shots than with film, and get all the variations that will give you the "perfect" shot. Hope this helps. Dave.

Thanks Jim, The old buildings are all over South Dakota. Well, at least eastern South Dakota. I was browsing you portfolio. I like your Canadian Goose. Not to be picky but the correct name of this magnificent bird is, "Canada Goose". A common mistake. However if he was born in Canada I guess that would make him Canadian :-) In which case he would be a Canadian Canada Goose....

Thanks Dave. I ahve been browsing your portfolio. Excelent work! It makes me think I working way to hard still shooting on film. What would you say the disadvantages are, if any, with shooting digital. I am just being old fashion? Also see atached pic. I think you might like it.

my family came form White South Dakota, and I can remember so many houses left abandoned. AT one time someone thought it was a good idea to live there, at least until the first winter. luckily our family's old homestead is now occupied by a young family with kids instead of being bulldozed in the field. nice sho Pat fern
