About
This watertunnel runs under the first dutch Drydock in Hellevoetsluis. It was build between 1798 and 1825 under direction of Jan Blanken, then Inspector-general of Public Work. The whole project, a hammerdock, a keeldock and the pump and watertunnels under it, was digged by hand. De watertunnels were filled with water, so that the carpenters in case of beginning fire, could take water with a bucket and put it out. There was stil one of these old buckets of cloth in use for demonstrations, but at the moment the gide wanted to show us the system, the bucket lost his bottom and smashed on the floor. This picture was taken a few moments after it had happened.
