About OK - it was fun fun fun! My first attempt at anything rising or setting :-) First of all, I couldn't see a thing in either the viewfinder or on the LCD! till I darkened the ???? and then I was shooting away while the sun was setting at a very fast pace!

I need comments/critique/advice/suggestions! I tried to remember the rule of thirds :-)

Tear into this so that I can learn :-)

this photo reminds me of a Mark Rothko painting. I don't mind the dark center strip. in fact I like this one better then the other as it is a little different from the classic "sunset" the lower portion where the water is reflected works great to me. I don't think I'd change a thing. Mostly in these cases when trying out something new I shoot hundreds of photos of the same subject to really work out what is exciting about this thing I am perceiving. When I take so many photos I will get bored with the "normal" perspective and then will naturally gravitate to something outside of the norm. I think that is one way to really get your best shot. Then in theory your compositions will develop into photos of ever higher quality. There is no limit. With digital your learning curve can develop so much faster then with a conventional camera setup when trying to develop in the compositional areas. Mostly because of no development costs and high storage rates with the new CF cards. In short i think you are on to something and would love to see more.

Warm regards, Tim

Yuck! What a boring image! :-) And I can say that because it is mine :-))
Yes, I see what you mean - best way would be to have more definition of the landscape if I want the water and reflection too, right? :-)
Thanks Jeroen, appreciate all your help.

Where's my crop Sweetie? :-))
Thanks for the input Jeroen - as well as the warning :-) Yes, I can quite believe it - I was truly "pumped up" when the sun started setting and I had to shoot away before it was too dark!

How did your shooting go yesterday? Any good movements?

Hmm, the example is missing; trying it again....:

('Q&D' example of framing the sunset by using the trees)

Jeroen Krol   {K:3085} 8/1/2004
Linn,

Watch it, sunsets can become addictive!

What I would do with this photo is to cut it in half and only use the upper part of it. Use the trees as a silhouet at the bottom of your image. It then frames the sunset; now, for my taste, there is to much of a dark area in the middle.

I did a (very) quick an dirty crop.

BTW, the coloours and tones are very OK

Lovely photo Linn, perhaps the middle (third) is a little too dark - but I am with Chris on this as sunsets are very difficult to capture.

Beautiful sunset. Well exposed and framed

Perhaps a slower shutter speed, smaller aperture with amnual focus (on the tree line) would enhance the photo. I agree with the other comment that sunsets are diffficult to capture. Trial and error - success provide the best lessons.

Best wishes..

This has a nice mood but does not have the interest as #1. Maybe too much dark area with little detail. Don.

This is nothing wrong with it except for the silhouette. When you create a silhouette ,need to choose a simple distinctive subject that stands out against a bright background, here you need to zoom out or use WL, so that your silhouette appears smaller and the dark area behind it too. Saeed

You have a nice glow here , but by zooming up you got a lot of undefined image in the midground, that being the trees, which now refelct on the water and double the dark undefined area. Go back and look at Chris's shot from Ham hill. find something simple that can be defined , a single tree, a weed,a windmill, you get the idea, and put that in the foreground or midground. The other side of a lake is temptimg but again you get so much undefined area with the woods and its reflection.

Hmmm not sure about this one... but keep trying... this might work earlier in the day..but its too late too dark and too much black in the middle due to the reflection..Odd looking sky there to me...

Wonderful orange glow, Linn, just not so sure about the mass of pretty indefinable black band in the middle. Mind you, I'm not sure how I would have done it any differently!! Sunsets are notoriously difficult for getting the right exposure!
Kind regards, Chris
