Hey Avia! There are some "automated procedures" out there to achive a x-processed look (that's what I'm using to get my crazy colors). I tried them and wasn't very pleased. Then I tried my best with PS. I can get the results depending on the color combination of the subjects(s), but not very consistently. You did the right things in PS to get that result. Congrats! i'm not sure what a plug in is..but i did only one adjustment compliments of ps to get the color..i love the function-Curves--- it alters tone,hue,contrast..basically everything within all the color schemes..try it out and tell me what you think!
