About
For those "railway buffs" - Train Spotters out there and I'm sure there are a few of you this photo should get you all steaming with envy! This is one of the converted to oil steam locomotives of the recently restored Abt Wilderness Railway on Tasmania's west coast. The original line carried copper and gold from the Mt Lyell Copper mines in Queenstown to near to the port of Strahan. In the early 1960s it was shut down and allowed for the bush to take over the line. Then in the late 1990s AU$25 million was poured into rebuilding the line along the original route and as near enough as possible to creating an authentic railway. The engines fortunately are actually some of the original ones to have ran on the line, and the rack pinion track originally designed by Swiss engineer Abt is back in use to assist the train up a steep gradient. Its in a really short space of time become one of the Great Little Railways of the World!
