A lovely portait with her exctremely concentrated gaze. Jag gillar den mörka bakgrunden som lyfter fram hennes ansikte och hennes koncentration på nyckelpigorna. Fin barnbild och annorlunda. Tänk vad mycket mer den säger än ett leende rakt in i kameran. Jeanette

She is so photogenic! I like the shorter DOF that puts the ladybugs more in focus and leaves her expression of intense wonder a little bit soft in the background. I was going to mention perhaps a little colourization of the ladybugs as well... but in B&W it makes you look deeper into the image to find out what she's looking at.

Save a little I had to crop from the top because of having to rotate it a little bit, the top is what I got when I shot this... I like your toning suggestion, it makes good sense to warm this up just a little bit.

Hey Stefan! Beautiful shoot. IMHO, one of your best portraits I ever saw from you. The concentration of the young lady (your daughter?), and the excellent composition with the blury background creates a strong atmosphere. I like the crop, but would tend to include a tad more at the top. I couldn't resist and played with your image, because I think a warmer tone would fit here well. Please let me know if that was all right with you and what you think. Cheers! Carlheinz

Yes - dodging... Although the red ladybugs are cute, I agree with you that that kind of selective desaturation is a little too gimmicky. In all b/w there is a reward for taking a look.

Hi Stefan, I'd go for dodging; burning would only increase the difference.... A minor technicality. The size? Hmmm. Not sure what a 7mm focal lenght refers to in SLR terms, but I think its a wide angle effect, so probably < 35mm. But as to the "other" size, why not go for the 800 pixels wide you can upload at?
I agree the red of the ladybugs would've been nice. But I don't think the use of selective colour is an option, not even to be considered seriously. It would remove an essential part of the appeal of this photo. (see attached)
In the attached photo, the ladybugs attract too much attention (immediately) and banalise the beauty of this shot.
Cheers,
Hugo

Hugo - thanks for seeing all the things I like about this photo :-) The hand looks like it belongs to an older body to me, a little odd - maybe I should burn it in a little. It may be the size too. The only thing really lost in conversion to b/w is the red of the ladybugs.

Hi Stefan, This is definately a shot I would be very happy about (if it were mine...;o) It has all the aspects I generally like; the off centered composition, the shallow DOF, the expression and tension, the originality, the complete use of the tonal range between B&W,.... Everything.
Very expressive shot, too. The very natural posture is another excellent element. And, to be honest, the lady bugs being the "prime subject" according to the title only adds to the title, as it creates some confusion at first... (then the question: why plural? but that answers itself) To make a long story short, a very appealing photo, Top Notch Job.
Good choice of converting it to B&W, as that removes the redundant information of the blue sky, the colour of the stick, etc.
The only thing that nags me a bit is the hand of the girl. It seems to be detached from the arm, and as uit has a much darker tone, it even looks a bit out of place, as if it were a foreign object. None the less, an outstanding shot.
Cheers,
Hugo
